Ferruzzano brings together coastal landscapes, viewpoints and historic sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Ferruzzano, you can start by considering whether you would like your stay to focus more on the beach, the landscape or the area’s cultural heritage. The places and sights offer different perspectives, from La Marina to the abandoned village of Ferruzzano Vecchio and the rock-cut palmenti.

Coast, Views and Woodland

The district of La Marina is known for its crystal-clear waters and broad white beach. At the headland of Capo Bruzzano, a lush pine forest and a viewpoint overlooking the coast shape the landscape. Rocca Carruso offers another striking vista: from the rock formation, the coast is visible as far as Africo Nuovo.

Piazza della Memoria also affords a sweeping view: from there, the panorama extends 360 degrees across the eastern Aspromonte mountains and the surrounding towns. The piazza can be reached without stairs; check locally before your visit to confirm that access conditions have not changed.

Ferruzzano Vecchio offers a different perspective: an abandoned village with characteristic lanes and old houses. It sits on a hilltop at an elevation of about 500 metres. Viewpoints are located at Piazza Belvedere and the three Calvari. The Bosco Rudina woodland covers 177 hectares between Borgo di Ferruzzano and the broad riverbed of the Fiumara La Verde. It is characterised by holm oaks and Italian oaks and lies at elevations between 200 and 400 metres above sea level.

Chapels and Historic Sites

Among the religious buildings is the small church of San Giuseppe in Piazza della Memoria. It was rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake. The small, pagoda-like church of Santa Maria degli Armeni overlooks the Fiumara di Bruzzano in the Valley of the Armenians. The Byzantine chapel is considered evidence of the Armenian presence in the region.

The historical origins of the Santuario della Madonna della Catena are not known with certainty. According to one account, sailors from Bruzzano, together with sailors from Ferruzzano, found a chest containing a beautiful alabaster statue of the Madonna. The story links devotion to the Madonna with sailors from the two towns, without presenting the uncertain account of its origins as established fact.

In Contrada Judario is a burial site known as “Monoliti e Tomba a Seduta a Putridarium.” Carved into sandstone, it illustrates ancient burial practices. The name refers to a distinctive tomb, while its material and burial form define the site’s historical character.

Palmenti and Routes

Around 160 rock-cut palmenti have been recorded in the Ferruzzano area. These wine presses consist of two connected basins at different heights. They were used to process grapes and make wine. Their design helps explain their former function: the basins formed part of a work process rather than being isolated hollows in the rock.

Routes and historic roads are also part of the area’s history. Stage 62 of the Basilian Way crosses the Valley of the Armenians and branches off to Ferruzzano. At Saccuti, now an abandoned hamlet, runs the Strata Cunsulari, a paved long-distance road dating from Roman times. Local route conditions may vary.

This allows you to choose a destination that suits your interests without combining the different places and themes into a single excursion.
