San Luca lies in the heart of Aspromonte National Park. Those looking for hotels in San Luca can plan their stay around specific interests: the historic center, Corrado Alvaro’s literary legacy, cultural heritage sites, and named trail sections offer different points of focus. The town’s old lanes are particularly evocative; the landscape and history around Polsi also shape the themes associated with San Luca.

Townscape and trails

The historic center is characterized by narrow, paved lanes. These routes were originally laid out for pedestrians; broad steps bridge the changes in elevation. The lanes are therefore both a feature of the townscape and part of the described route through San Luca.

The San Luca–Piani di Zervò section of the Sentiero Calabria starts at Corrado Alvaro’s birthplace and climbs uphill through the old lanes. Another stage, Polsi–San Luca, starts at the Santuario della Madonna di Polsi, follows the Fiumara Buonamico to Lago Costantino, and then continues on to San Luca. The routes differ in their described course: one focuses on the town’s lanes and the climb, while the other follows the river, passes the lake, and then continues to San Luca.

Aspromonte and Polsi

Pietra Cappa covers about four hectares, is 140 meters high, and is considered Europe’s largest monolith. The Santuario della Madonna di Polsi stands at an altitude of 862 meters in a mountain-ringed valley in the heart of Aspromonte, crossed by the Bonamico river. These are distinct landscape features: the monolith’s size and height, and the elevation and valley around the sanctuary.

The pilgrimage dates also provide a seasonal connection to Polsi. On August 22, a caravan sets out on foot from San Luca for the Madonna di Polsi; this departure marks the start of the novena. The solemn feast of the Madonna di Polsi takes place on September 2. If you plan your trip around these dates, check the dates and arrangements in advance.

Corrado Alvaro and cultural heritage

The Fondazione Corrado Alvaro is based in the building where Corrado Alvaro was born. It is dedicated to preserving the memory and cultural heritage of the writer, journalist, and poet, as well as to studying, researching, and promoting his work and Southern Italian literature. The birthplace also retains its period furnishings, Alvaro’s bedroom, and his books.

A specific starting point for exploring Alvaro’s literary history is his first work: “Polsi nell’arte, nella leggenda, nella storia” was published in 1912. The 60-page account covers the history of Polsi. Literature and place are directly connected here, as the title of this early work puts Polsi at its center.

Other traces range from the parish church of Santa Maria della Pietà, built in 1606, to archaeological remains from different periods. In Palazzi near San Luca are the remains of a Roman villa from the Imperial era. Pietra Castello Castle is among the early medieval cultural heritage remains of the Valli delle Grandi Pietre. The remains of Potamia recall the settlement destroyed by an earthquake in the second half of the 18th century. These examples differ both in date and in form: the church, villa, castle, and remains of Potamia each tell a different part of the story.
