Benestare is a hilltop settlement in the Locride area. Its small houses stand on several levels in a layout reminiscent of a horseshoe. This stepped settlement pattern gives the town a clearly recognizable architectural profile. The first settlement core developed between the 17th and 18th centuries, when farmers settled here to work the land. Agriculture and the development of the settlement are therefore among the early reference points in the town’s history.

Timpa and the Religious Buildings

The historic center is called Timpa. Its characteristic houses were built exclusively from gypsum, a mineral found in abundance within the municipal area. The building material points to a local resource and is also a defining feature of the architecture. Here, the history of the town connects building practices with the landscape: understanding Timpa means considering not only the arrangement of the houses but also the material used. Anyone interested in regional architecture will find the gypsum houses a tangible point of reference.

On Piazza Matrice, in the oldest part of town, stands the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria della Misericordia, commonly called the Chiesa del Rosario. Another important landmark is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe. It dates from the 16th century and is considered the oldest building in Benestare to have survived to the present day. The church houses a wooden statue of Saint Joseph. The local religious tradition is also connected to this building: the Confraternita di San Giuseppe e Sant'Antonio was founded in 1845 and is based at the Chiesa di San Giuseppe.

The Teatro Comunale “Chjesia nova” was created by renovating an old religious building. Benestare therefore brings together different forms of cultural heritage: a historic center with gypsum houses, churches with their own distinct histories, and a theater in a building that once served a religious purpose. These landmarks connect your visit with the town’s architectural and religious history.

Cunfrunta: An Easter Tradition

The Cunfrunta is an Easter tradition that has been passed down in Benestare for centuries. During the event, Mary announces the Resurrection of Christ. On Piazza Ariaporu, Saint John and the Madonna meet: Saint John comes from the Timpa area, while the Madonna arrives in the square via Via Roma. The meeting place and the two routes of arrival make the procession’s course easy to follow. Anyone who wishes to take part is welcome. The date depends on Easter; details may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning your trip specifically around the Cunfrunta, check the date of that year’s event in advance.

Hills and Green Spaces

The landscape around Benestare also has distinct landmarks. Colle di Verraro is known for its centuries-old oak forests. At 553 meters above sea level, Monte Canalo is the highest peak in Benestare. The two places represent different features of the landscape: the ancient oak forests at Colle di Verraro and the elevation of Monte Canalo. They complement the town’s historic landmarks with a picture of its wooded, hilly surroundings.

The Catoja area is a green space whose use and upkeep support public enjoyment and the preservation of local natural heritage. Alongside the townscape and religious history, the connection between public enjoyment and nature conservation is therefore part of Benestare’s character. When planning your trip, the main points of interest are easy to distinguish: Timpa and the churches reflect architectural and local history; the Cunfrunta is a cultural event tied to Easter; and Colle di Verraro, Monte Canalo and Catoja offer different points of reference in the landscape.
