San Lorenzo: Aspromonte, Churches and Byzantine Heritage
Accommodation in San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo combines a striking location in the Aspromonte with a medieval historic centre, religious buildings and festival traditions.
Location and townscape
The inhabited centre lies on the southern slope of the Aspromonte, on a ridge separating the valleys of the Fiumara di Melito and the Fiumara dell’Amendolea. Another landmark within San Lorenzo is Piazza Regina Margherita, where a field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) of historic, cultural and religious significance stands.
The historic centre lies on the crest of a hill and has a medieval urban layout. The historic centre is a cultural and landscape asset. San Lorenzo is also considered to be of Byzantine origin. Greek continued to be spoken here until the first half of the 18th century.
Churches and works of art
In the town centre stands the Chiesa Matrice Santa Maria ad Nives, a Renaissance building dating from the 15th century, reached from the main square. The church also houses a marble sculpture of S. Maria di Nives, likewise dating from the 15th century. Both the Renaissance building and the marble sculpture date from the 15th century.
The Santuario di Maria SS.ma Assunta della Cappella is located in the district of San Pantaleone, which belongs to San Lorenzo, and overlooks the Amendolea Valley. The mother church stands in the town centre; the sanctuary is in the district of San Pantaleone.
The Museo delle Icone Bizantine is housed in the Dittereale church. San Pantaleone is also associated with Byzantine art: an icon from the district belongs to the Cretan school and dates to the 12th century.
Festivals, processions and regional specialities
The feast day of San Lorenzo includes solemn Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church and a procession carrying the statue of the saint through the town’s narrow streets. Another procession takes the icon of the Madonna della Cappella on foot for about three kilometres from the church of San Lorenzo to the sanctuary on 12 August.
The feast of the Madonna della Cappella is celebrated every year. For 2026, a programme of liturgies, processions and prayers, as well as cultural talks, theatre and music, was announced for 12 to 15 August. If your trip is timed around a festival, check the dates for the year you plan to travel.
At the major festivals in San Lorenzo, visitors can sample traditional cured meats and meat and cheese specialities from the Greek-Calabrian area, along with oils and wines from small family producers.
A section of the Sentiero dell’Inglese
On the second stage of the Sentiero dell’Inglese, the trail climbs from San Lorenzo to the Rione Castello. From there, you can enjoy views across the surrounding landscape.
