Melissa between the old town and the coast
Accommodation in Melissa
Melissa brings together a historic hilltop town and the district of Torre Melissa, which is particularly focused on beach tourism. The main town sits on a rocky spur a few kilometres from the sea. This distinction is useful when choosing where to stay: the focus here is on local history, winegrowing and narrow lanes, while Torre Melissa has its own appeal, with a beach and a fortified tower.
Finding your way around the historic centre
The historic centre is criss-crossed by narrow lanes that can only be explored on foot once you have parked. Plan to get around the centre on foot. The settlement is arranged in terraces on a rocky hill, with vineyards and gentle hills shaping the landscape along the approach. This brings together a distinctive townscape and a rural setting, while keeping the main town distinct from the coastal district.
Medieval heritage and churches
The medieval heritage is visible in the massive town walls and the remains of the castle. These stand on the upper rocky ridge and include three round towers. The Chiesa della Madonna dell'Audienza was built in 1672 on the summit of the rocky hill outside the walls. Another trace of history leads to the Chiesa di San Giacomo in the upper part of town: it is Melissa's oldest church and dates back to the early Middle Ages. The first settlement of the historic centre probably grew around its original structure, a type of church known as a pieve.
The Chiesa di San Nicola is also located in the historic centre and is one of Melissa's oldest buildings. It stands on a square that for centuries was the hub of activity and the heart of the community. The photography museum dedicated to the artist Ernesto Treccani adds to the town's cultural offerings. The Museo del Vino is in the historic centre, near the Chiesa di San Giacomo. Next to this church is the Vecchio Frantoio Oleario, where you can learn about the traditional cold-extraction process used to produce olive oil.
Food and wine
Traditional Melissa cuisine includes Sardella, homemade pasta with meat or legume sauces, Stigliole and stockfish with peppers. Metiturisca, typical of harvest time, adds a distinctive seasonal touch. These dishes give the local food culture a clear connection to the seasons and regional produce. Melissa is part of the CittĂ del Vino network because of its wine production. Activities in the surrounding area include wine tastings at local wineries.
Torre Melissa: beach and cultural heritage
Torre Melissa is a district of Melissa with a particular focus on beach tourism. It has clear water and a beach of very fine sand mixed with pebbles. The Torre Aragonese, a fortified tower dating from the 16th-century Aragonese period, is part of the district's cultural heritage. The Museo della CiviltĂ Contadina di Melissa displays agricultural and pastoral tools, recreated rural living spaces, and exhibits on weaving and ceramics. In Torre Melissa, coastal scenery and the history of rural life therefore sit side by side as distinct themes.
When to visit and festival dates
The most important religious festival in the centre of Melissa is held in honour of San Francesco di Paola. It takes place from 1 to 3 August and includes three days of processions, traditional games and music. A band made up of children and young people from Melissa is also part of the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around this period, check the dates for the year you intend to travel.
