The Capo Colonna Archaeological Park is a striking introduction to Crotone’s history: it includes the remains of the original temple, cult buildings and the 4th-century BC Katagogion. Five themed routes connect archaeological sites, coastal landscapes, places of worship and historic villages; route details may be updated.

Archaeology and Collections

The Capo Colonna Archaeological Museum is arranged across three exhibition pavilions: Terra preserves finds from the period of Roman rule, Sacro focuses on evidence from the sanctuary’s sacred area, and Mare displays underwater finds. The museum thus organizes its collection by theme rather than presenting it simply as a succession of individual objects. Exhibits include a 5th-century BC Corinthian bronze helmet and a marble sculpture of Amore e Psiche, found in the coastal waters off Crotone.

Fortress and Religious Heritage

Castello di Carlo V adds another historical perspective to the archaeological evidence. It was built in the 9th century on the ruins of the ancient Greek acropolis of Kroton. Its design illustrates the transition from medieval to Renaissance military architecture: the round towers face inward, while the bastions face the sea. This contrast in orientation makes the architectural shift clear. The castle also includes tunnels and a secret exit called “Le Sette Porte.” Access arrangements may vary; check the current conditions before visiting.

The Santuario di Santa Maria di Capo Colonna houses the icon of the Madonna di Capo Colonna, dating from the 10th or 11th century and known as the “Black Madonna.” The Cappella Epifania also contains a 13th-century baptismal font. The different dates reveal several centuries of religious heritage.

The Museo e Giardini di Pitagora offers a different approach to cultural history. Through panels, installations and educational content, it explains the profound influence Pythagoras’s thinking has had on Western culture. While the sanctuary focuses on tangible religious objects, the Pitagora Museum turns its attention to the impact of ideas.

Landscape, Sea and Regional Cuisine

I Calanchi are clay landscapes formed millions of years ago and shaped by water erosion. The sea around Capo Colonna lies in Zone A, the area of full protection within the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area. The marine protected area’s regulations page was updated on July 15, 2025; check local rules before visiting.

Swimming and guided underwater visits with support from local diving centers are permitted in the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area. Sailing and rowing are also allowed; motorized vessels are subject to a maximum speed of 5 knots. Activities remain subject to management rules; speed and mooring restrictions apply.

Regional cuisine offers another point of connection: Sardella crotonese is one of the typical dishes you can try in Crotone. Whether it is available at a particular venue may vary.
