Catanzaro brings together several distinct highlights for your trip: a medieval city center, museums and historic buildings, a large park on the city’s hills, and a sandy beach at Lido. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider which of these aspects interests you most during your stay. Culture, nature, music history and the coast each offer their own appeal.

Old Town, Architecture and Art

The historic center is characterized by winding streets and a medieval city core. Along Corso Mazzini, 19th-century palaces and monumental squares stand side by side. These two impressions—the lanes of the old town and the grand architecture of the Corso—offer different perspectives on the city’s history.

The Casa della Memoria Mimmo Rotella is housed in the artist’s childhood home in the historic center. Its collection includes more recent works as well as several pieces from the 1950s and 1960s, 250 books about prominent Pop Art and Neorealist artists, photographs and memorabilia. A visit therefore brings together Rotella’s works and materials that explore other art movements.

Also in the historic center is the Teatro Politeama, designed by Paolo Portoghesi. Its stage is designed for opera, symphonic music, contemporary dance, operetta, spoken theater and musicals. If a performance is important to your trip, check the schedule for your travel dates.

MARCA – Museo delle Arti Catanzaro is housed in the last surviving architectural testimony to Catanzaro’s golden age of silk production. Its collection includes 39 paintings by Andrea Cefaly Sr. Here, a building connected to the history of silk and a clearly defined collection of paintings come together.

Museums with Distinctive Themes

The Museo del Rock is dedicated to the golden era of rock ’n’ roll in the 1950s and 1960s. Its collection includes more than 10,000 original records, as well as period posters, historical magazines and memorabilia. The collection makes the museum’s musical focus clear: it centers on a specific era of rock ’n’ roll and its contemporary context.

The MUSMI – Museo Storico Militare Brigata Catanzaro presents more than two centuries of military history through memorabilia, weapons and uniforms. It also features a scale reconstruction of a First World War trench, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the wartime experience of the period. Compared with the more narrowly defined period covered by the Museo del Rock, MUSMI’s historical scope spans more than two centuries.

Park, Sculptures and Coast

The Parco della BiodiversitĂ  Mediterranea Michele Traversa covers 60 hectares on the hills of Catanzaro. It contains recreated Mediterranean ecosystems featuring native species. The Parco Internazionale della Scultura, an open-air contemporary art gallery, is located within the park. Nature and sculpture thus offer two distinct interests in the same park.

Another side of the city can be found in Catanzaro Marina, in the Lido district, where a sandy beach stretches for more than five kilometers. This gives the city a distinct coastal appeal alongside the historic and cultural attractions of the center. Local food can also be part of your trip planning: at characteristic taverns known as “putiche,” you can try local specialties. These include “morseddhu,” a very spicy dish made with veal tripe.
