Viggiano combines the history of the harp with a sanctuary at high altitude and trails through the mountain landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Viggiano, these different highlights can help shape your plans: local history, religious heritage and excursions into nature.

Harp Tradition and Religious Heritage

The Santuario Basilica Minore del Sacro Monte di Viggiano stands in the Agri Valley on one of the highest mountains in the Apennines, at an altitude of 1,725 metres. Historically, the Antico Tratturo della Madonna di Viggiano served as a pilgrimage route through the wooded slopes of Sacro Monte to the sanctuary. On the first Sunday in May, the procession for the Festa della Madonna di Maggio travels from Viggiano to the mountain.

The harp is also present in the townscape: viewed from above, Piazza San Giovanni XXIII is shaped like a harp. Small harp bas-reliefs dating from 1858 to 1882 can be found on the portals of some houses and on the keystones of arches in the historic centre. The Scuola dell’Arpa Viggianese e della Musica was founded in 2008 and recognised by the municipality as a cultural institute in 2009, with the aim of reviving the harp tradition. Lessons for the Viggiano branch of the Conservatorio „Gesualdo da Venosa“ di Potenza are held in Villa del Marchese.

MUVIG is dedicated to the agricultural and pastoral work, crafts and domestic life of historic Viggiano. It is housed on the restored ground floor of the Franciscan monastery, whose building dates from 1473. The tourist information office offers a free guided tour of the historic centre by reservation.

Mountain Trails for Different Ability Levels

Viggiano’s trail network covers around 30,000 metres and leads to viewpoints above 900 metres. It includes trails of moderate and high difficulty; check local conditions before setting out. The Sentiero delle Rupe Rosse is considered an alpine trail and includes a visit to two caves. The Sentiero di Santa Maria La Preta ends above a rocky outcrop overlooking the Casale stream. A rock church once stood at this spot.

Another route description covers the Torrente-Alli trail: it starts on the municipal road between Viggiano and Montagna Grande and leads to a narrow gorge with steep rock walls. The trail is considered suitable only for experienced hikers; appropriate equipment and an accompanying park guide are required. Before setting out, confirm how the guide will be arranged. This clearly distinguishes the trail from the routes described to caves or historic sites.

Forest, Museo del Lupo and Seasonal Activities

The Museo del Lupo is located near the Fontana dei Pastori at an altitude of about 1,400 metres in a beech forest. It displays stuffed wolves and other animal species from the area and provides information about the Appennino Lucano National Park. Nature walks are possible in the surrounding area. The Fontana dei Pastori Path begins at Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII and passes through forests and a beech forest to the Museo del Lupo and the Fontana dei Pastori, at an altitude of about 1,400 metres.

The „Felicetta“ trail follows a different route: it first descends to the Casale stream, crosses the waterway and then climbs towards the Manche area near Felicetta. These routes therefore focus on different sequences of trails and destinations. Compare the descriptions and check trail conditions in advance.

In winter, Montagna Grande di Viggiano is described as a winter ski resort on the slopes of Monte di Viggiano. The ski area has two ski lifts and a conveyor belt serving slopes in beech forests, including a three-kilometre cross-country ski trail. Other activities include snow tubing, Nordic walking, sledding and snowshoeing; equipment can be rented. As operations and availability depend on the season, check which activities are available during your travel dates.

The harp also features in the events calendar: the „Review of the Traditional Harp“ takes place annually in the first days of August. Check the exact dates if you would like to plan your trip around this event.
