San Fele can be explored through a range of interests: the Cascate di San Fele and their trails lead into the surrounding countryside, while churches, palaces and local festivals offer insights into the town’s history and traditions. Practical information on individual hiking trails and recurring festival dates is also available to help you plan your trip.

Waterfalls and Nature around San Fele

The Cascate di San Fele are formed by the Torrente Bradanello. The watercourse runs through the municipal area, descending a series of elevations. Around 5.2 percent of the municipal area—approximately 514 hectares—lies within the Parco del Vulture. The Bosco Santa Croce extends around the Santuario di Pierno; biodiversity and natural springs are defining features of the Bosco Monte dello Squadro. The area of the Cascate di San Fele within the park is designated as a habitat for the Eurasian otter.

Hiking Trails to the Cascate di San Fele

Four trails lead through the surrounding hills to the waterfalls. The available information on their distances, durations and destinations varies. On the U Urtone trail, you can see a 22-metre-high waterfall in the Vallone Corbola gorge. Il Paradiso leads to the waterfalls in about ten minutes. Le Gemelle is approximately 300 metres long; at 4.5 kilometres, Il Ponte is the longest of the four trails and takes around four hours.

The information allows for a practical comparison, although the same type of measurement is not available for every trail: an approximate duration is given for Il Paradiso, the length for Le Gemelle, and both the length and approximate duration for Il Ponte. You can take these differences into account when planning your hike; trail conditions may vary, so check them before setting out. Trained hiking and tour guides are available for guided visits. Ask about available dates in advance if you would like to include a guided tour in your plans.

Churches, Palaces and Local History

The birthplace of San Giustino De Jacobis is in the western part of San Fele, opposite the Chiesa dell’Annunziata. De Jacobis was born in San Fele on 9 October 1800. Inside the Chiesa dell’Annunziata, two horizontal aisles divide the interior. Arches supported by pillars separate them. This description of the floor plan offers a specific insight into the architecture of the church interior.

The Chiesa S.Maria della Quercia has a floor plan of three aisles arranged in the shape of a Greek cross, Baroque stucco decorations from the 16th century, and an 18th-century dome. An urn containing the relics of San Giustino De Jacobis is located in the left aisle. Architecture and local history also come together at Palazzo Stia: the palace dates from the 18th century and was the residence of National Guard General Francesco Stia. Its intricately carved marble portal features side volutes, fluted central columns and the family coat of arms. Palazzo Frascella is considered a significant example of 17th-century architecture.

Palazzo Giannini also has a specific historical connection: in 1868, a chapel was built there at the instigation of Don Pasquale Giannini. The bishop at the time authorized the celebration of Mass in the chapel. The Gualchiera di San Fele is recognized as a cultural heritage site of historical, environmental and ethno-anthropological interest, and can be viewed from the tourist trails at the waterfalls. San Fele’s origins date back to 969 AD, when Otto I of Saxony had a fortified castle built.

Festivals and Traditions

The Santuario di Pierno welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year, including visitors from Apulia and Campania. Festivals in honour of the Madonna di Pierno take place each year on the first Sunday in May, 15 August and 8 September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, take the recurring festival days into account.

Transumanza is an established local event that reenacts transhumance and activities from pastoral life. In addition to hiking trails and historic buildings, recurring religious festivals and local traditions offer other possible focuses for your stay in San Fele.
