Gallicchio – Hiking and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Gallicchio
Gallicchio brings together a clearly measured hiking trail, churches, palazzi and archaeological traces. The Sentiero Belvedere offers a particular focus on the landscape, while works of art and historic buildings take center stage in the town center. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether that means outdoor activity, architectural history or both.
The Sentiero Belvedere and the landscape
The Sentiero Belvedere is 3.2 kilometers long and runs at an altitude of 611 to 738 meters. Its route leads from the Chiesa del Carmine to the archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere. The entire trail lies within Natura 2000 sites and the boundaries of the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano. Its length, altitude and named destination make it easy to identify as a hike in its own right. What makes it special is the connection between the trail and its archaeological endpoint: landscape and history come together along this route.
The SIC Murge di S. Oronzo features conglomerate pillars more than 100 meters high and a gorge formed by river erosion. A trek there can lead from the banks of the Agri, lined with riverside vegetation, through nearby oak woods and on to an extensive evergreen forest. This sequence offers a varied natural setting, with riverbanks, oaks and evergreen woodland forming distinct sections of the landscape. The Eurasian otter, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture and Apennine wolf are also among the endangered species that may be observed in the area; individual sightings are not guaranteed.
Near Piana della Neviera, the route follows an old tratturo. This path connected Gallicchio with San Chirico Raparo and descended to the Agri Valley. This section adds a historic connection between settlements and the valley to the present-day route.
Churches and works of art
The medieval town center includes the Chiesa Vecchia, dedicated to the Assumption, as well as the early 17th-century church of the Madonna del Carmine, located in the historic town center. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta also preserves several works of art: its main altar is decorated with gilded stucco, and the church also contains 18th-century wooden statues of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption. A painting of the Madonna del Carmine, created by Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio in 1613, is also part of its furnishings.
The Chiesa del Carmine in the upper part of Gallicchio preserves a fresco of the Madonna between Saints Leonardo and Pietro, also by Giovanni Angelo D’Ambrosio. Another trace of the town’s religious history is the Cappella della Madonna del Carmelo. It was built in 1613 on the ruins of a church destroyed by fire. Together, these buildings and works of art offer different perspectives, from the medieval town center and a chapel with an older history to specific paintings, statues and altar decorations.
Palazzi and local history
The Palazzo Baronale is in the lower part of town and was built around the 1620s. It consists of two sections separated by an inner courtyard and has a vaulted entrance. In 1979, the palazzo was protected as a heritage asset of artistic and historical interest. The Palazzo Mazziotta is one of Gallicchio’s noble palaces, which belonged to the former feudal lords. Together, the two buildings complement the churches with a perspective on palace architecture and the town’s former ruling history.
The landscape is also part of the town’s history: Gallicchio was rebuilt on the rocks of Fosso dei Monaci, in rugged terrain surrounded by caves. The “MEMORARE IUVAT” project is dedicated to recovering and enhancing the community’s historical memory, from the Saracen period to the baronial era. Its program included a performance titled “Lo Scaliello d'Orlando.”
Archaeological traces
Excavations in the archaeological area of Gallicchio Vetere have uncovered numerous roof-tile fragments, pithoi and loom weights, as well as a hoard of 13 silver coins from various mints of Magna Graecia. The finds are kept at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Siritide in Policoro. Gallicchio Vetere can therefore be understood not only as the destination of the Sentiero Belvedere: the excavation finds give the archaeological theme tangible objects and a named place where they are kept.
