Rionero In Vulture offers two distinctive themes for planning a trip: the landscape around Monte Vulture and the town’s history, reflected in its palaces and churches. The municipality provides access to Monte Vulture and serves as a starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. If you would like to make nature and historic sites the focus of your stay, you will find specific points of interest here for both.

The landscape around Vulture and Monticchio

About 15.3 percent of the municipality of Rionero In Vulture lies within Parco del Vulture, equivalent to around 814 hectares. Another point of interest is the Grotticelle State Nature Reserve in Contrada Monticchio Sgarroni. Established in 1971, it was the world’s first protected area dedicated to protecting the Vulture brimstone butterfly. The figures and history of the reserve give the nature theme a concrete local context.

Lago Grande di Monticchio lies entirely within the municipality. It is also important for international research into sediments and natural habitats. Together with access to Monte Vulture and Rionero’s role as a starting point for excursions in the surrounding area, this makes for a clear focus for travelers interested in landscapes and nature research. For this kind of trip, the lake and the reserve are distinct points of interest; their significance is not limited to offering a general view of the region.

Palaces and museums

Palazzo Giustino Fortunato opened in Rionero In Vulture in 1728. In 1975, it became the home of the town library; it houses around 11,000 volumes from the Fortunato family’s historical collection. The cellars are also part of the building’s local history: on May 31, 2003, a museum of peasant civilization was established there, followed later by a multimedia museum exhibition on brigandage after Italian unification.

The Museo del Brigantaggio – ex Carcere Borbonico is located at Largo Giuseppe Mazzini 17 bis. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance. The exhibitions on peasant civilization and brigandage offer different ways to explore history: the palazzo combines its library history with museum displays, while the museum’s name and location at Largo Giuseppe Mazzini give it a distinct connection to the area.

Churches and historical layers

The Chiesa del SS. Sacramento stands on the site of the former church of Santa Maria de’ Rivonigro, in the center of the original settlement, which disappeared in the first half of the 14th century. The present nave was rebuilt between 1857 and 1879, following the 1851 earthquake. Altars were also added for the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Francis of Paola and the Cross. The church thus brings together the history of an earlier settlement and the later period of reconstruction.

The Chiesa dell’Annunziata appears to date back to 1700; it is first mentioned in the visitation records of 1759. It was built as a private oratory for the Marc’Antonio di Silvio family. After the 1851 earthquake, it was almost entirely rebuilt and enlarged. In addition to the main altar, altars were added for Saint Anthony, Our Lady of Sorrows and the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate has an original Gothic structure. It is believed, but not confirmed, to have been built in the first half of the 13th century by Benedictine monks from Monticchio. Several high-quality 18th-century paintings are kept in the church. A plaque on its exterior also commemorates the meeting held on April 1, 1502, between Ludovico d’Armagnac, Duke of Nemours, and Consalvo Fernandez di Cordova, the supreme commanders of the French and Spanish armies, to divide Italian territory.

Traditions and regional products

The Via Crucis passes through the streets of Rionero, depicting the Passion of Christ in a dramatic presentation. “Briganti o Migranti” is another documented local event: consecutive editions were held in Rionero in 2025 and 2026. The 2025 edition is described as featuring historical reenactments, immersive sets, period costumes and live performances in the historic center. These two examples differ in character: the Via Crucis presents the Passion as a street performance, while the festival features historical re-enactments and performances.

Aglianico, a red wine suited to long aging and associated with Rionero In Vulture, is also part of the area’s regional character. The area is also known for high-quality olive oil. Pecorino and Caciocavallo cheeses come from the mountainous area around the town. In the wider Rionero area, mineral springs in the Vitalba Valley and the Monticchio Bagni area have contributed to tourist and thermal development since the beginning of the 20th century. Wine, olive oil and cheese thus offer distinct regional connections, while the springs are part of the area’s development history.

The travel themes can therefore be distinguished as follows: Monte Vulture, Grotticelle and Lago Grande di Monticchio foreground nature and landscape; the palazzo and churches reveal local history through collections, building phases and historic memorial sites. Events and regional products complement these themes with lively and culinary connections.
