Rotondella combines a historic center laid out in a spiral with views stretching from the sea across the Lucanian hinterland to the peaks of the Pollino. Churches, historic buildings, natural scenery and a traditional dish offer different starting points for planning your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rotondella, first consider whether you’d like to focus on local history, landscapes or coastal activities.

Historic Lanes and Buildings

On the hill, the historic center follows a spiral layout. Its lanes are connected by tunnels and stairs. The shape describes the layout of the town, while the connections between the lanes are a distinctive architectural feature in their own right. Rotondella’s position on a rounded hill also shapes the views of the surrounding area: the panorama stretches from the sea across the Lucanian hinterland to the peaks of the Pollino.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, Rotondella’s mother church, stands in the historic center. It was initially built with a single nave in the years after 1580 and expanded between 1750 and 1755. The building’s original form and later expansion can therefore be distinguished by period. At the entrance is a stone holy-water stoup with a snake carved into it—a striking detail alongside the church’s architectural history.

Another religious complex is the church and Franciscan monastery of Sant’Antonio da Padova, built between 1650 and 1661. The Torre di Avvistamento offers a different historical point of reference: it was built in 1518 together with the Palazzo Baronale and is now the only surviving part of the old complex. The two examples represent different architectural contexts and periods.

The Lamie di Bitonte add another architectural form to this picture. Beneath the walkable area of the Bitonte family’s palace are stone vaulted arches dating from the 17th century. Thus, in addition to churches and a tower, historic vaults are also among Rotondella’s notable buildings.

Landscapes and Route Themes

At the foot of Monte Coppolo lies the Gole di Candela natural area. There, numerous waterfalls meet rock layers from different geological eras. Water and rock formations represent two distinct aspects of this natural area: a visible landscape feature and geological traces of different eras.

Coast and Local Cuisine

The beach at Marina di Rotondella is part of a stretch of Ionian coastline more than 35 kilometers long. Water sports such as sailing and spearfishing can be enjoyed in Marina di Rotondella. For planning your trip around a particular theme, this coastal setting offers a different focus from the historic buildings and lanes of the town center.

U Pastizz’ R’tunnar is another local specialty with a distinctive profile. This meat-filled pastry is recognized as a typical product by the Basilicata region and the relevant ministry; it is also one of the region’s 77 traditional products. It is baked in a wood-fired oven. The name thus connects a specific dish with its regional recognition and a particular method of preparation.
