Accettura – Tree Rituals, Cultural Heritage and Forest Landscape
Accommodation in Accettura
Accettura combines the tradition of tree rituals with a historic townscape and a protected forest and park landscape. For planning your trip, it helps to consider these themes separately: the cultural history is reflected in the museum and the Maggio di Accettura, while Bosco di Montepiano and the offerings at Lucania Outdoor Park provide a focus on landscape and activities.
Culture and Townscape
The Museo dei culti arborei is an ethnological-anthropological museum in the municipality of Accettura. It traces the history and typology of tree rituals in Lucania. Its focus is therefore both clearly defined by its subject and rooted in the region: it explores the forms of this tradition and its history in Lucania. The museum is located in the Parco naturale di Gallipoli Cognato - Piccole Dolomiti Lucane and also serves as a visitor centre.
Every spring, Accettura celebrates the festivities and tree rituals of the Maggio di Accettura. This annual event adds a seasonal highlight that differs from the museum’s permanent focus. If you are planning your trip around these festivities, check the exact dates in advance.
The historic centre also contributes to the town’s cultural character: aristocratic buildings line narrow streets, and the parish church of S. Nicola rises above them. The buildings and the church add different features to the townscape: the focus is both on the development along the narrow streets and on a single building that stands out from this setting.
Forest Landscape and Outdoor Activities
Accettura is located in the protected area of the Parco regionale Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane. Bosco di Montepiano is a holm oak forest covering around 1,000 hectares, a few kilometres from the town centre. The approximate area and tree species give the landscape a distinct character. This makes it possible to consider the forest landscape as a separate focus alongside the historic townscape.
The municipality is also home to Lucania Outdoor Park, an adventure park in Bosco di Montepiano. Its courses use bridges and obstacles made of ropes, wood and cables; these include zip lines, suspension bridges and log bridges. The specific courses on offer may change. So, before your visit, check which courses are available.
The activities also include tree climbing in a safe environment and hikes through centuries-old forests. The hikes pass unique rock formations and lead to viewpoints with panoramic vistas. There are several different outdoor activities to choose from: obstacle courses with bridges, tree climbing, or hikes through forest and rocky landscapes.
Archaeological Perspective
The archaeological site of Croccia Cognato preserves the remains of a prehistoric settlement of the ancient Lucanians dating from the 6th to the 4th century BC. This dating places the settlement remains in a clearly defined early period and distinguishes this archaeological perspective from the tree rituals of the Maggio di Accettura, which are celebrated every spring.
