In Torre Mozza, the coastline is shaped by several kilometres of white beach, high sand dunes and a long protected stretch of coast. If you are planning a stay, the beach, nature park and Bau Beach help you get to know the different sides of the area. The very fine sand slopes gently into clear, crystal-clear water.

Beach and coastline

Along the coast, private beach clubs, holiday villages and stretches of free beach alternate. The coastline is therefore not used in the same way everywhere: when planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these different coastal areas. The beach extends for several kilometres; behind it runs a chain of high sand dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub. The dunes separate the shore from the coastal road and the buildings along the seafront. This means the sandy beach by the water and the vegetated dune ridge lie side by side as clearly distinct landscape features.

Coastal landscape between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini

The protected Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park extends for nine kilometres along the coast between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini, passing through Torre Mozza. Torre Mozza beach itself is several kilometres long; the nine kilometres refer to the stretch of coast between the two named places. This distinction helps separate the length of the local beach from the extent of the regional nature park.

The Oasi Blu “Secche di Ugento” is also located in the stretch of sea between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini, which runs past Torre Mozza. The Secche di Ugento shoals are recognised as a Slow Food Presidio. There are seven pools between the Torre San Giovanni lighthouse and Torre Mozza. In order, they are called Suddenna, Bianca, Ulmo, Rottacapozza Nord, Rottacapozza Sud, Spunderati Nord and Spunderati Sud. The nature park, stretch of sea and sequence of pools give the coastal area a regional dimension that extends beyond the individual beach.

Visiting the beach with a pet

Bau Beach in Torre Mozza was set up to allow people with pets to use the beach too. Check the rules and seasonal regulations before your visit. You can reach Bau Beach via the SP91 (Torre San Giovanni–Torre Vado) and the “Torre Mozza” exit. Then head towards the marina town centre and the tower. The beach is immediately behind a small bridge on the right. As road regulations may change seasonally, it is best to check access details in advance.

The tower and local history

The construction of Torre Mozza, or the towers in question, is dated to the 1560s, as is the case with many towers of the period. It is associated with the 1563 edict of Viceroy Don Pedro Afan de Rivera. However, it remains unclear whether this refers to the same tower or to two different towers. The date places the tower within the history of the coast without resolving the ambiguity over its identification.

The Sagra ta Turre is a recurring festival in Torre Mozza. It was also included in Ugento’s summer programme for 2025; one edition was announced as the eighth.
