Galatone brings together several clearly distinct themes: church architecture and art, traces of the town’s history, a prehistoric settlement and a traditional fruit. If you are first weighing up the character of the destination, these different highlights can help you choose what to explore in Galatone based on the interests you want to shape your stay around.

Churches and sacred art

The Chiesa Madre, also known as the Collegiata dell'Assunta, was built from 1591 to 1595 on the ruins of an earlier church. Its interior is shaped like a Latin cross. Four chapels are located on each side of the nave, with two more in the transept. The nave and transept form the cross, while the chapels divide the space into distinct areas. The historical archive of the Chiesa Madre includes three Greek codices. Thus, alongside its construction date and architecture, historical documents offer another distinct aspect of its religious heritage.

The Baroque Chiesa del Crocifisso offers a different emphasis. It was built from 1683 to 1694 by artisans from across Salento, with Giuseppe Zimbalo playing a prominent role. Its richly decorated interior features gilded elements and large paintings depicting the miracles of the Crocifisso della PietĂ . The Chiesa di San Sebastiano e San Rocco was also rebuilt in the Baroque style, in 1712. It stands beside the Dominican monastery and houses the Madonna del Rosario by Donato Antonio D'Orlando. The two churches are distinguished by their construction dates, furnishings and the specific artwork named here.

Local history at the gate and palazzo

The Porta di San Sebastiano was built around 1500 as part of Galatone’s Aragonese town walls. It is the only surviving gate of the three monumental city gates and two gates intended for military use. A different historical role comes to the fore at Palazzo marchesale Belmonte-Pignatelli: from the 16th century onward, it was the seat of Galatone’s feudal lords; it was commissioned by the Squarciafico family. The portal and elegant windows with floral motifs and mascarons have been preserved. Together, the gate and palazzo illustrate two aspects of local history: the town’s fortifications and the seat of its feudal lords.

Prehistory and nature

The Grotta Cappuccini settlement takes us further back in time. It is a significant archaeological site dating from the Eneolithic period to the beginning of the Bronze Age. Its chronology therefore reaches far earlier than the dated church buildings and town gate. The Natura 2000 site Montagna Spaccata e Rupi di San Mauro (IT9150008) offers a different perspective. It lies within the municipalities of Galatone and Sannicola and adds a natural dimension to the cultural and historical themes.

A seasonal regional fruit

The Albicocca di Galatone, a traditional fruit promoted as a Slow Food Presidium, is part of the region’s food culture. Its flesh is sweet, with a moderate acidity. The harvest takes place in May and June. Alongside the historical dates of its buildings, Galatone therefore has a clear seasonal connection to the region’s food culture.
