For a culture- and history-focused trip, San Dana offers several specific points of interest: sacred architecture, the Santa Apollonia Crypt and rural heritage. The village is home to the parish church and the Santa Apollonia Crypt. In the archaeological area near San Dana stands a Roman villa with baths; on the excursion from Macurano to San Dana, you can visit a 17th-century palmento.

Church and Crypt

The parish church of San Dana has an interior in the shape of a Latin cross. In this floor plan, a transept crosses the longitudinal axis; the term therefore describes the spatial layout of the interior. Visitors interested in architecture can gain a concrete perspective here, distinct from the historical perspective offered by the crypt.

The Santa Apollonia Crypt dates from the 6th to the 11th century and was created by Byzantine monks of the Order of Saint Basil. At the same time, it is considered a possible rare example of pre-Byzantine monasticism in Italy; its origins may date back to the 4th century AD.

Traces of frescoes from several historical periods remain on the walls of the crypt, including works from the 11th century and from 1758. Comparing these two dates reveals a longer history of imagery: the 11th century falls within the dating of the crypt, while 1758 marks a much later period. The frescoes thus add layers of time to the view of the crypt, extending beyond its possible early origins.

Roman and Rural Heritage

A Roman villa with baths stands in the archaeological area near San Dana. It broadens the range of topics with a Roman landmark and can be clearly distinguished from the sacred buildings. This offers two different approaches to suit your interests: religious architectural history, with the parish church and crypt, or archaeological remains from Roman times. This contrast helps you choose the historical focus of your trip.

The 17th-century palmento is a cultural landmark of rural life. On the excursion from Macurano to San Dana, a walk of about 200 metres along the Serra di San Dana leads to it. The approximate length refers to this stretch of the path to the palmento, not the entire route between the towns. Another option is the “Il mondo sommerso dei trappeti e dei luoghi di culto” itinerary, which connects Macurano, San Dana and Montesardo. Comparing the two, the palmento is a specific rural landmark on the Serra di San Dana, while the itinerary links three named places. This makes it possible to distinguish between a single historical landmark and a broader, multi-location theme.
