San Lorenzo: Discover Church and Architectural History
Accommodation in San Lorenzo
The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire gives a trip to San Lorenzo a specific cultural and historical focus. It is located in Contrada San Lorenzo, a few kilometres from the centre of Vasto. Here, the architectural history of a 20th-century parish church can be connected with older traces of the settlement of the same name. This brings several historical periods into focus for travellers who want to include architecture and local history in their plans.
The 20th-century parish church
The present appearance of the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire is based on a design by Roman architect Furio Fasolo, created towards the end of the 1950s. Construction of the new parish church had already begun in 1955; it was not fully completed until 1969. The start of construction, the design and the completion are distinct milestones: the church took shape over several years of construction, which cannot be reduced to a single year. The roof and roof coverings were also restored later, in 2010.
The façade is divided by brick pilasters and panels, with stone inlays complementing the brickwork. The local materials and building techniques used are part of this architectural concept. Inside, the church is laid out as a three-aisled space: round arches resting on pillars separate the aisles. “Three-aisled” describes a layout of three longitudinal sections, while arches and pillars mark the divisions. The building can thus be understood through two distinct design elements: the brick and stone divisions of the façade and the spatial arrangement inside. The Chiesa has been designated as being of cultural interest by the regional heritage authority.
The interior also contains a work of art: the painting “Il Martirio di san Lorenzo” by Cesare Giuliani. For those interested in religious art, it adds a named work to the church’s architectural features.
Older churches and traces of local history
The history of the name San Lorenzo goes back further than the new parish church. The history of an early church of San Lorenzo dates back at least to 1542. The historic church of San Lorenzo was built in 1786 and became the centre of the new settlement of the same name, which grew in the following years. It should be distinguished from the new parish church: the two buildings belong to different periods in the history of the area.
The historical context extends beyond the church buildings. Frentanian necropolises were discovered in the parish area of San Lorenzo during the last century. The parish area’s historical context also includes an important ancient route: in antiquity it was called “strata maior”; later, it became the Tratturo Magno. Thus, alongside church history, settlement development, burial history and historic routes are also themes to explore in San Lorenzo.
