Lentella combines a distinctive gypsum landscape with archaeological traces, historic churches, and trails in the Gessi di Lentella area. This gives you several practical focal points for planning your trip: geology and vegetation, finding your way along the trails mentioned, or the town’s history. You can decide whether landscapes and trails or historical landmarks will be the focus of your stay.

Gypsum landscapes and views

Lentella lies 398 metres above sea level on the gypsum vein of Abruzzo. The town sits on a rocky cliff amid gentle clay hills; from Lentella, views extend to the peaks of the Maiella. Monte Calvario consists mainly of gypsum and lies in a landscape of small woods and scrubland. Typical Mediterranean vegetation is also found in the Gessi di Lentella area. Species rare in the region include wild orchids and the feather grass of the Monti Frentani (Stipa austroitalica subsp. frentana). The elevation and the views of the Maiella peaks provide two spatial reference points: a specific figure for Lentella and a named direction for the view.

Trails in the Gessi di Lentella area

The I Gessi di Lentella route starts at Lentella’s junction with the Fondovalle Trigno and is 12.5 kilometres long. Most of it runs within the SIC “Gessi di Lentella”. It is particularly suitable for mountain biking. The Sentiero dei Gessi has different points to help you orient yourself: it ends at Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi in the municipality of Lentella and crosses Via dell’Olio in Lentella. For your planning, the details answer different questions: for I Gessi, the focus is on the length and the most suitable way to travel; for the Sentiero, it is the endpoint and the crossing with Via dell’Olio.

Archaeological and historical landmarks

The Castello Manno archaeological complex in the hamlet of La Coccetta includes Bronze Age fragments. In Contrada Casale dei Monaci are the remains of an old Benedictine settlement, built on the remains of a pagan temple. The sacred buildings also provide a sense of chronology: the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built around 1500, and the Chiesa dei Santi Patroni Cosma e Damiano at the end of the 18th century. These two dates therefore set different construction periods side by side. Palazzo Catalano is a characteristic building in the fortified village. The ruin of the Chiesa di San Giovanni is near Lentella’s old cemetery.

Local highlights

The gypsum water spring is also located in Contrada Casale dei Monaci. Its water is still used today to wash the eyes; it is traditionally attributed with healing properties. Lentella’s culinary specialities include sweet fried scrippelle. They add a local speciality to the landscape and historical themes.
