Zalacsány: Castle, Lake and Körtvélyesi Nature Trail
Accommodation in Zalacsány
Zalacsány offers several distinct points of interest for planning your trip: the Körtvélyesi Nature Trail by the lake, the architectural history of Batthyány Castle, and a cycle path along a former railway line. Local themes include landscapes and trails, as well as a castle that now operates as a hotel.
Nature trail above Lake Zalacsány
The Körtvélyesi Nature Trail is on the slope above Lake Zalacsány. The 3.1 km trail follows a forest path covered with wood chips. Eleven information boards cover management in the transformation forest, characteristic tree species, features of the landscape, and the public-benefit activities of Zalaerdő Zrt. In this way, the nature trail combines forestry topics with information about trees and the landscape. The boards give the route a clear thematic focus if you are interested not only in the forest path itself but also in what it has to offer. You can reach the trail via the Zalacsány recreation park by walking along the lake’s embankment.
Lake Zalacsány is now used by anglers and boaters. The conditions for recreational use may vary depending on operations. If you are planning to fish or go boating, check what options are available in advance.
Batthyány Castle and local history
Batthyány Castle is on the edge of Zalacsány. Built in the late 19th century in the Neo-Baroque style, it has been renovated and is now operated as a hotel. The castle acquired its present form in 1913, when Pál Batthyány, főispán of Zala County, and his wife, Countess Karolina Inkei, had it rebuilt in a style combining Baroque and Art Nouveau elements. The two dates refer to different stages in the building’s history: its construction in the late 19th century and the creation of its present form in 1913.
Other sights in Zalacsány include the early 19th-century Csány family mausoleum in the local cemetery. Malatinszky–Batthyány Mansion is also among the town’s sights. Together with the castle, these landmarks offer different points of interest for those who want to explore the historic setting of the town as well as its landscapes and trails.
Cycle path and sports-related attractions
An existing local cycle path runs along the former railway line between Zalaapáti and Zalaszentgrót through the northern outskirts of Zalacsány and continues as far as the boundary of Kehidakustány. This route gives cyclists a specific geographical reference point on the northern edge of town. Zala Springs Golf Resort is listed in Zalacsány as a sports and tourism complex. If you are considering visiting the resort, check the latest information about specific facilities separately.
Zala in a broader context
The Zalai Borvidék is also a regional landscape attraction within the broader travel destination of Zala. It developed on the slopes and uplands of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. The wine region comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. This regional perspective complements Zalacsány’s specific sights with a broader view of Zala’s landscape.
