The basalt landscape of Kovácsi-hegy and the routes described from Vindornyaszőlős give the area a clear connection to nature and hiking. For planning, it is worth considering geological sites, a hiking loop, and nature or themed trails separately: they differ in length, route, and focus.

Basalt Road, Cave, and Lakes

Near Vindornyaszőlős, on the western edge of Kovácsi-hegy, there is a basalt road about one kilometer long. Its features include columns 5 to 15 meters high, caves, and other morphological formations. Together, they offer an impression of the variety of rock formations found there.

Vadlány-lik Cave formed at the same time as the basalt road. Cracks caused by tilting and sliding movements ran parallel and perpendicular to the trench of the basalt road. The cave and basalt road are therefore part of the same geological formation process.

The nearby Rakottyás Lakes are also located on Kovácsi-hegy and are home to rare animals and plants. Basalt sinkholes are among the rare and noteworthy features there: small ponds lie in their depressions. The area thus contains caves, rock formations, and bodies of water associated with different geological contexts.

Hiking Loop and Nature Trails

An 8 km hiking loop starts at the eastern edge of Vindornyaszőlős. From the parking lot, it follows a nature trail to the basalt road, continues to the Rakottyás Lakes, and returns to the parking lot through Kő-árok. The loop includes 150 m of elevation gain and takes 3 to 4 hours. Its distance, elevation gain, and estimated time give you concrete points of reference for planning.

A route marked with an S also leads from Vindornyaszőlős to the basalt road on Kovácsi-hegy; the nature trail follows this marking as well. The six-kilometer nature trail opened in 1999 and can be reached from the village via the quarry. It leads to important natural features in the area and introduces visitors to its plant and animal life.

The Buruczki Ferenc Nature Trail runs along the side of the mountain facing Vindornyaszőlős. The hiking loop connects the basalt road, lakes, and Kő-árok; the nature trail focuses on the area's plant and animal life. This makes it easy to distinguish the two routes' different focuses.

More Destinations and Activities

On the eastern side of nearby Kovácsi-hegy is a Buddhist stupa, reachable from Vindornyaszőlős by an easy hike. It is considered Europe's largest Buddhist stupa and was built around a Buddha relic and an 11 m-high tree of life. This religious site complements the area's natural and geological attractions.

In 2008, the Vidra Nature Trail and an ecological playground were created in the center of Vindornyaszőlős, next to the sports field. Both are designed for preschool- and school-age children. With their specific target audience, they differ from the geological sites and hiking routes on Kovácsi-hegy.

A cycling day stage also passes through Vindornyaszőlős: the 30.3 km route runs from Zalaszentgrót through Kisgörbő, Vindornyaszőlős, and Vindornyafok to Karmacs and Hévíz. The distance refers to the entire stage. By comparison, the 8 km hiking loop, which takes 3 to 4 hours, is a differently measured route; the cycling day stage connects several places over a longer distance.
