Gelse brings together architectural and commemorative heritage with opportunities for hiking and cycling. Local highlights range from a Late Baroque church and several memorial sites to an 18.5-kilometre circular hike and paved paths on the vineyard hill.

Church and Memorials

The Roman Catholic church in Gelse was built between 1774 and 1786 in the Late Baroque style. A memorial to the First World War stands at one corner of the church. There is also a memorial in the church garden to the heroes who fell in the Second World War. The two memorials are located in different places and commemorate different periods of war. There is also a Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Gelse. Together, these sites form a historic focal point that extends beyond the architecture of the church building.

Cellars on Szoros-hegy

Well-kept cellars with hipped roofs and reed thatch can be seen on Szoros-hegy. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces on the gable ends as well as along the sides. Both the roof shape and the roofing material are distinctive features of these cellars. This creates a different architectural accent in the local landscape from that of the Late Baroque church: here, the focus is on roof construction and reed thatch, while the church building stands out for its period and style.

Hiking and Cycling

A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Zalakomár, Zalakaros, Galambok, Zalaújlak, Zalamerenye, Nagybakónak, Gelse, Újudvar, Nagykanizsa and Homokkomárom. A red-marked hiking trail passes through Újudvar, Gelse, Kerecseny, Orosztony, Nagykanizsa and Liszó. Gelse is therefore part of two marked routes with different itineraries; the sequence of places on each route helps you tell them apart.

The Gelse–Csibiti tó–Gelse circular hike is 18.5 km long. Gelse’s vineyard hill also has about 7 km of paved paths available to hikers and cyclists. These figures provide different information for planning your trip: a set distance for the circular hike and an approximate length for the paved paths. Plan your day around the distances and check current trail conditions before setting out.

Gelse in the Wider Zala Destination

The wider Zala destination offers further landscape and cultural themes that broaden the picture beyond Gelse. The Zalai Borvidék wine region developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység. It comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. The Kis-Balaton is Zala’s largest body of water, is under strict protection and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. The regional context thus encompasses wine country, protected waters and literary connections.
