Discover Zalamerenye
Accommodation in Zalamerenye
Zalamerenye can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the locally protected Szelidgesztenye group in the beech forest, a hiking route described in an ecological context, and the Pálos Mill. The Baroque church and Millennium Memorial Park add specific buildings and places of remembrance to the town’s history. The themes differ mainly in whether you focus on a landscape, a route or a building.
The Szelidgesztenye Group and the Route in the Mata Valley
The locally protected Szelidgesztenye group grows in a protected beech forest in Zalamerenye. It consists of coppice shoots from the 800-year-old “kanonok fája,” which died in 1912. This natural site thus links a named group of trees with the history of a single tree that has since died.
A green hiking trail marker leads from the center of Zalamerenye through the Mata Valley to the summit of Gesztenyés-hegy. The route passes Kiskúti Stream and the northern side of Kan-bükk Hill. This makes the starting point, destination and named landmarks easy to distinguish. Check the latest route information before setting out.
Pálos Mill: Milling Process, History and Uses
The Pálos Mill lies on the boundary between Garabonc and Zalamerenye. The ground floor houses a pálinka distillery. The upper floor is suitable for community events and cultural programs. These details therefore relate both to different parts of the building and to possible uses of the upper floor.
Visitors can learn about the milling process and the mill’s history; various household items and documents can be viewed inside the building. The rattling of the roller mill and the grinding of the millstone are among the sounds visitors may hear. As operating conditions may change and visitor information is subject to change, check the latest notices before your visit.
The Church and Millennium Memorial Park
The Baroque church in Zalamerenye was built by the Chapter of Veszprém between 1757 and 1760. The Millennium Memorial Park was established later, in 2000. These two dates help distinguish the church’s construction from the more recent creation of the park.
The park contains a carved memorial post. It bears a bust of Saint Stephen, the Hungarian coat of arms, the municipal coat of arms and the year 2000. The year thus relates both to the establishment of the park and to one of the post’s listed features; the bust and the two coats of arms are other specific details that help describe the monument.
A Listed Excursion Route in the Wider Area
In the wider region, a listed excursion route runs from Zalakaros via Galamboki Halastó, Zalaújlak szőlőhegy, Zalamerenye, Mata-völgyi tó and Garabonc, then back to Zalakaros. Zalamerenye lies between Zalaújlak szőlőhegy and Mata-völgyi tó on this route. If you plan to follow it, check the latest route information beforehand.
This regional itinerary is distinct from the route described in the Mata Valley: one lists several stops between Zalakaros and its return, while the other leads from the town center to the summit of Gesztenyés-hegy. This lets you distinguish the two route descriptions by their respective courses without combining them into a single route.
