Zalavár: Memorial Park and Kis-Balaton House
Accommodation in Zalavár
Zalavár offers two distinct themes for planning a trip: the history of Zalavár-Vársziget and the nature of Kis-Balaton. The historical and archaeological memorial park brings together an exhibition on the area’s landscape and history, monuments and ancient ruins. The Kis-Balaton House focuses on the water protection system and aquatic life. This makes it possible to weigh up the focus of a stay between historical heritage and nature.
History and Monuments on Zalavár-Vársziget
The memorial park on Zalavár-Vársziget brings together different kinds of evidence: the exhibition covers the area’s landscape and history, while monuments and ancient ruins provide further historical points of reference. The park includes Hungarian, Bulgarian, Slovenian and Austrian monuments. The nations’ monuments stand on the roadside between the Kis-Balaton House and the Millennium Monument.
The site’s historical significance is also clearly established. Zalavár-Vársziget is considered Hungary’s most important site associated with the cult of Saint Adrian. From the late 860s, the Basilica of Saint Adrian served as the main church of Methodius’s Pannonian archdiocese for almost a decade. This timeframe places that role in an early period of the site’s history.
The Szent István Chapel is dedicated to Saint Stephen, King of Hungary. It was built in 1996 over the foundation walls of a church dating from the Árpád era. Since 2011, a tree of life has stood in the Millennium Monument: its 258 leaves symbolize the municipalities of Zala County. The chapel, the older foundation walls and the tree of life thus each represent different historical layers and forms of remembrance.
Water and Landscape at the Kis-Balaton House
The Kis-Balaton House on Zalavár-Vársziget presents the natural assets of the Kis-Balaton water protection system and its role in protecting the water quality of Lake Balaton. A model illustrates how the system operates in several modes. A diorama focuses on the underwater world of Kis-Balaton. Together, these topics range from how the protection system works to underwater habitats.
A multi-part water playground lies between the Kis-Balaton House and the Szent István Chapel. In the central water area, children can playfully explore the course and force of water, as well as how it can be used. Here, water is explored differently than in the exhibition, model and diorama. If you are planning a visit to the house or playground, check the latest visitor information in advance.
More Nature Themes in the Zala Destination
In the Zala destination, Kis-Balaton is the largest body of water; it is strictly protected and covers 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek. This regional perspective adds to the themes of the Kis-Balaton House: the water protection system can also be viewed in the wider context of a protected landscape with literary associations.
Another distinct excursion destination in the Zala region is the Kápolnapuszta Bivalyrezervátum. The reserve can be explored along a 1.5-kilometre walking trail with rest areas and viewpoints. The Water Buffalo Festival is held there each year in May or June; the dates may vary from year to year. During opening hours, visitors to the reserve can pet tame animals every day. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
