Balatongyörök offers several distinct points to consider when planning your trip: Községi Beach, the cycling route that runs through the town, Szépkilátó lookout, and nature and cultural topics. You can tailor your stay around a beach visit, scenic views, outdoor activities or historical insights.

Beach and routes

Balatongyörök’s Községi Beach can be reached on foot, by bicycle, train, boat or car. Both entrances are accessible, allowing people with reduced mobility and guests with wheelchairs or strollers to enter conveniently. Before visiting, check with the operator that the access information is still up to date. You should also check any seasonal rules before your trip.

For cyclists, the beach entrance’s location along the route is worth noting: the Balatoni Bringakörút runs through Balatongyörök and passes just a few metres from the beach entrance. This means you can take the proximity of the cycling route and beach into account when planning your day, without treating them as the same route.

The Pele-apó nature trail offers a different focus. Created by the Balaton Uplands National Park, the trail runs through the Keszthely Mountains near Balatongyörök and was designed specifically for children. Its 8.5 kilometres feature 38 stations that teach visitors about the habitats, plants and wildlife of the region’s forests. The distance describes the length of the route; the stations provide its subject-based structure. The focus here is on learning about the forest.

Panoramas, history and crafts

From Szépkilátó, the view stretches across Lake Balaton, the witness hills of the Tapolca Basin and Szigliget Bay. The lookout therefore brings together several distinct elements of the panorama. Below Szépkilátó lies Római-forrás. In the 1940s, the remains of a Roman villa dating from the 2nd century, along with its bathhouse and spring, were excavated there.

Balatongyörök’s Roman Catholic church is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1715 in honour of the Archangel Michael and rebuilt in 1745. The archaeological finds from the 2nd century and the church’s building history offer distinct historical perspectives on the town.

At Kajdi Kristály, visitors can watch lead crystal and glass objects being worked. The techniques include grinding, engraving, sandblasting, etching and polishing. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, ask the operator about current visiting options.

Zala as a wider travel destination

Within the wider travel destination of Zala, the Zalai Borvidék offers its own landscape and cultural setting. It developed on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and on the north-western slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység, and comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. The Kis-Balaton offers a different regional highlight: it is Zala’s largest body of water, strictly protected and covering 14,745 hectares. It is also the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek.
