Veszprém combines a castle complex with distinctive buildings, paths along the Séd stream and recurring cultural events. When planning, you can focus on different things: city history, viewpoints, exercise in a public park, or an event in May or July. If you’re looking for a hotel, your travel dates and the themes of your stay are a good place to start.

Castle, towers and city history

Veszprém Castle was built in the 10th to 11th centuries on Várhegy, a hill in the city. A wall from the former fortifications runs along the edge of the steep slopes; historic buildings now stand within the complex. At the castle, the former fortifications and surviving historic buildings thus stand side by side. The Szent Benedek-hegy is also associated with Veszprém’s past and is considered the burial place of the ancestors who settled the land.

The Tűztorony was originally intended as a watchtower and was later converted for fire observation. A spiral staircase leads to a circular balcony overlooking Veszprém’s districts. Another structure is on a much larger scale: the Szent István völgyhíd, also known as the Viaduct, spans the Fejes-völgy above the Séd stream and is 50 metres high. The two structures offer different perspectives on the city’s character—from the tower and its circular balcony to the high bridge over the valley.

The ruins of the Szent Miklós-templom on Szent Miklós-szeg and their surroundings were handed over in May 2006. This adds another historic site to the architectural history of the castle and its surroundings.

Viewpoints and paths along the Séd stream

The 22-metre-high Gizella királyné kilátó stands in the Gulya-dombi Parkerdő. The observation tower was built entirely from scratch. It can be reached in about ten minutes on foot from the upper car park of Veszprémi Állatkert. The approximate walking time applies specifically to this starting point. If you include another viewpoint in your plans, the Tűztorony has the circular balcony described above, with views across the city’s districts.

The Kolostorok és Kertek follows the Séd stream along a walking and cycling route of more than three kilometres through a well-maintained public park. The route, stream and park together provide the main points of reference. The route is described as suitable for both walks and bike rides. It offers a different perspective on Veszprém than its historic buildings: here, the focus is on the waterside route and the park.

Cultural events in May and July

The Gizella Napok takes place every year in May in Veszprém. The programme includes a historical procession, concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances; the programme may vary from year to year. The Veszprémi Utcazene Fesztivál follows in July. Street musicians from Hungary and abroad perform on small or improvised stages in the city centre. VeszprémFest is also a recurring music festival and a regular part of the city’s July programme. Programmes and performers may change. If an event is a key part of your stay, check the latest dates and programme details before travelling.

Museum and themed exhibition

The Víziközmű Múzeum és Kiállítóterem commemorates Veszprém’s drinking water supply, which has been in place for 120 years, and presents a themed exhibition about water management. Advance registration is required for a visit; check the visitor arrangements beforehand. This lets you plan the museum visit as a separate activity rather than confusing it with one of the annual recurring events.

Other places to visit

In Veszprémvölgy, you’ll find the Magyar Népmesék játszókert and the Rézsűs játszótér. Both playgrounds are distinct, named places in the valley. Together with the castle, viewpoints, route and cultural events, they add to the range of themes you can consider when planning your stay in Veszprém.
