Balatoncsicsó: Churches, Wine and a Panoramic Cycling Route
Accommodation in Balatoncsicsó
Balatoncsicsó offers several points of interest to consider when planning a trip: church history, wine and a panoramic cycling route. Nearby, you’ll also find the ruins of Szent-Balázs Church. You can explore these different topics individually or take them into account when choosing the right place to stay.
Church History in and around Balatoncsicsó
The ruins of Szent-Balázs Church are a specially protected architectural monument and an archaeological site. They stand on a vineyard above Szentantalfa; administratively, the vineyard belongs to Balatoncsicsó. The church’s building history includes a small, single-nave predecessor, probably dating from the 12th century, which later became the choir of Szent-Balázs Church. Around 1300, this structure was extended to the west with a larger nave, a west gallery and a tower. The ruins were conserved in 2001 according to plans by H. Nándori Klára.
The parish also has a long history: the priest of the Szent-Balázs parish church above Szentantalfa is recorded in 1333; the parish was still operating in the mid-16th century. The ruins therefore offer insight into both the church’s architectural development and the long religious history of the surrounding area.
Construction of the Roman Catholic Szent-Ágoston Church in Balatoncsicsó itself began in 1777 under parish priest Jankó Ádám. It was consecrated in 1781 in honor of Bishop Szent Ágoston. The history of this late-18th-century church offers a different point of reference from the medieval beginnings of Szent-Balázs Church.
