Somlószőlős combines local wine offerings with Zichy Castle. When planning a hotel stay, you can start by considering these two highlights; you can also explore destinations in the wider Balaton North travel region. Other themes there include caves, volcanic landscapes, and exhibitions, each at the locations specifically mentioned.

Wine and a castle in Somlószőlős

KABOR Somlói Borbirtok offers a tasting package featuring four wines, including Olaszrizling, Furmint, and Juhfark. The wines included may vary. If you are considering the tasting as part of your plans, check the selection included at the time in advance. This lets you enjoy a local wine tasting featuring the wines on offer without assuming the package contents are fixed.

The second highlight is Zichy Castle in Somlószőlős. Count Manó Zichy had the castle built. It is in a serious state of disrepair, and its surroundings are also neglected. If its current condition matters to your plans, check it in advance. The wine tasting and the castle’s history thus offer different ways to explore the town.

The surrounding area: Doba

Nearby, in Doba, you’ll find the English landscape garden of Erdődy Castle. The well-maintained garden covers 91 hectares. This expansive garden adds a different landscape focus to Somlószőlős’s wine-related appeal. For planning purposes, these remain two separate destinations: the wine tasting in Somlószőlős and the garden nearby.

The Tapolcai-tavasbarlang is in the wider Balaton North travel region. Boat trips are available there, along with the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town, which has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers so far. The cave experience can therefore be approached in two ways: by boat trip and through a guided exhibition. The explored length of the system also gives an idea of its geological scale.

Hegyestű, also in Balaton North, is a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. It exposes the interior of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic information board at a viewpoint to identify the surrounding hills. A rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia adds another geological point of interest. The mountain, viewpoint, and rock garden offer different ways to explore the site: its elevation and location provide a sense of place, while the volcano’s interior and its rocks are the main geological focus.

Badacsony is also in Balaton North. This volcanic mountain has hiking trails and panoramas for hikers. Its distinctive geological formations include features known as basalt organ pipes. Badacsony is in Veszprém County on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, opposite the town of Fonyód. Special grapes are grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. Its connection to wine differs from Somlószőlős: KABOR offers a specific tasting package, while at Badacsony the focus is on growing grapes on the slopes and making wine.
