Gersekarát brings together Sárvíz Lake, protected natural areas, and sites of local culture. The following distinctions can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

Water and beach at Sárvíz Lake

The 36-hectare Gersekaráti Sárvíz Lake is a reservoir created for recreation. It was formed in 1992 by damming the Sárvíz and Csengő streams. For planning your trip, what matters most besides how it was formed is the different ways the lakeshores are used.

On the eastern shore, there is a spacious, well-maintained grassy beach for summer recreation by the water. Gersekarát also has a designated natural bathing area at Sárvíz Lake; this designation applies seasonally. There is a designated, separate dog beach in the park area. As beach operations are seasonal and details about the dog beach may change, check the current rules before your arrival.

More than 50 developed fishing spots are available on the side of the lake facing the village. For planning your time by the water, the locations are a clear distinction: the grassy beach is on the eastern shore, while the fishing spots are on the side of the lake facing the village. The dog beach is a separate designated area in the park.

Protected nature: Legelő erdő and Fias-tó

The locally protected area “Legelő erdő” lies north of Gersekarát and consists solely of oak woodland covering more than 15 hectares. Fias-tó is Gersekarát’s largest protected marsh, covering 3 hectares and 2,079 square meters. Protected peat moss also grows there.

The two areas represent different aspects of nature: oak woodland defines the character of Legelő erdő, while the marsh and protected peat moss are characteristic of Fias-tó. If you would like to include nature in your trip planning, you can choose between a protected oak woodland and a marsh landscape.

Church, themed trails, and park

Gersekarát’s church dating from the Árpád era is a nationally protected monument. Next to it is a Calvary with the “Családok” and “Élővilág” themed trails. The church and the two named trails combine a historical connection with different thematic focuses.

The Millenniumi park features limestone and wooden sculpture groups, as well as a Kneipp spa. Sculpture and the Kneipp spa are therefore also among the local attractions. Together with the church and Calvary, they offer a different selection from a stay focused on the lake or protected natural areas.

Pilgrimage and local history

The tradition of a pilgrimage featuring a procession and Mass in the Karátföldi Bükkhegyi vineyard was revived in 2009 and has taken place every year since. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the date before your arrival.

The permanent exhibition at Gersekarát Primary School showcases the pupils’ long-standing work in local history and local studies, as well as their efforts to preserve traditions. It is open to everyone; check visiting hours in advance.

The Gersekarát Falumúzeum displays everyday objects as well as household and decorative items from local life in the past. The school and museum have different focuses: the exhibition centers on the pupils’ work and the preservation of traditions, while the Falumúzeum focuses on objects from everyday life in the past. Before planning a museum visit, check current visiting options.
