Nagymaros: Church Tower, Calvary and Beach
Accommodation in Nagymaros
Nagymaros brings together historic sites, a beach and recurring events. If you are looking for a hotel in Nagymaros, you can plan your stay around these specific interests: local history, walks, time by the river or an event date. The following topics can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Church, Calvary and local history
Construction of the Roman Catholic Church of Nagymaros began sometime in the first half of the 14th century. Its tower is the only medieval ecclesiastical monument in the Danube Bend that has survived to this day. A relief depicting a grape cluster, supposedly dating from Roman times, is set into the church’s northeastern plinth. This building thus brings together a long construction history and a relief whose historical attribution is deliberately left open.
The Calvary Chapel and Stations in Nagymaros were built in 1773. The Calvary staircase was created in the 1920s with donations from local families. The Tájház (Country House) also focuses on local history: it presents the lives of the Swabians who came to Nagymaros through household objects and a furnished home with old furniture and equipment. The church, Calvary and Tájház offer different perspectives, from ecclesiastical architectural history to depictions of everyday life.
Beach and local offerings
Nagymaros’s free beach extends along a 200-meter stretch. The shore is pebbly and sandy, and muddy in places, so the terrain varies within the area described. There are several places to eat and drink, an ice cream parlor, a playground, toilets and showers. There is also a self-service bicycle repair station. If you plan to spend time at the beach, you will find these food and practical facilities there alongside the shore itself.
At the Nagymaros Farmers’ Market, producers offer meat, vegetables, mushrooms and homemade dairy products, among other things. There are also fruit juices and syrups, pastries, freshly baked bread and yeast cakes. The selection therefore ranges from savory foods to baked goods and drinks. If you would like to include local produce in your travel plans, the market is a separate place to visit in addition to the beach and historic sights.
Events and boat rental
The Nagymaros Catholic Youth Meeting has been held every year in May and October in the parish garden for around half a century. The Misztrál Festival is also held annually. In good weather, the Misztrál Ensemble performs outdoors on the György Szabados Stage in the church garden. The youth meeting returns in May and October; good weather is a requirement for the ensemble’s outdoor performance. Check event dates when planning your visit.
For activities on the water, BTZ operates a kayak, canoe and boat rental service in Nagymaros. As availability may change, check the current offering before making plans. This allows you to consider this option separately from the beach and cultural activities also described, without assuming which activity you prefer.
Walks and hiking trails
The path up Nagymaros’s Kálvária Hill leads up 167 steps to a pleasant walk through the cool forest. A hiking route in the vicinity of Nagymaros starts at Nagymaros railway station: the safe, marked trail follows the yellow waymark, Panoráma út and Kittenberger út to Remete Cave. So, alongside the walk up Kálvária Hill, directions to a destination in the nearby area are also available for guidance.
