If you are looking for a hotel in Kismaros, local hikes, village history and the connection to the Királyréti Forest Railway can each offer a different focus for your stay. The routes described vary in distance, elevation gain and approximate duration; the Danube riverbank is a place to enjoy nature and go canoeing. You can therefore decide how to think about Kismaros based on whether you would like to focus on hiking trails, local history or a ride on the forest railway during your trip.

Hiking and Views in the Danube Bend

The hike from the centre of Kismaros via Gál-hegy to Nagy-Kőszikla is 7 km long, involves 600 metres of elevation gain and takes about 3 hours. The viewpoint offers a panorama spanning about 180 degrees across the Danube Bend and the Pilis Mountains. Another 7-km hike leads through the Csömöle Valley to the meadows of Szokolyai; it involves 400 metres of elevation gain and also takes about 3 hours. The two equally long routes thus differ in their destinations and elevation gain. A third hike leads through the Csömöle Valley to Nagy-Kőszikla: it covers 9 km with 650 metres of elevation gain and takes about 4 hours. For this destination, you can compare the route via Gál-hegy with the longer option: the difference is 2 km and 50 metres of elevation gain, and the walking times differ by about an hour.

Village History and Local Culture

In the village, the permanent exhibition of the Kismarosi Sváb Muzeális Gyűjtemény displays historical objects, old documents and photographs, former agricultural and winemaking tools, and relics of religious life typical of village life. Its subject matter ranges from the settlement of the first Swabian settlers in the first half of the 18th century to the present day; the exhibition covers the village’s ethnographic traditions and history. For a trip on which you would also like to get to know Kismaros itself, this collection offers a different focus from the hiking trails: local traditions and historical ways of life take centre stage instead of landscapes and routes.

Danube Riverbank and Nature

The Danube riverbank near Kismaros is considered a largely unspoilt stretch of the Danube Bend and provides a habitat for numerous waterbirds and amphibians. The riverbank is also suitable for canoeing. Conditions for canoeing can vary depending on the season; take this into account when planning your stay. Kismaros is also one of the municipalities affected by the Duna-Ipoly National Park.

Getting Your Bearings with the Forest Railway

For orientation, the Kismaros stop on the Budapest–Vác–Szob railway line is a useful reference point. From there, it is a few minutes’ walk to the Királyréti Forest Railway station. The forest railway journey from Kismaros to Királyrét takes 30 minutes. The walk and the train journey are two separate legs: the half hour refers to the journey to Királyrét, not to the connection between the railway stop and the station. If you plan to take the train, check the timetable for your chosen travel date.
