Kertvaros: Discover trails, churches and art
Accommodation in Kertvaros
If you’re looking for a hotel in Kertvaros, you can plan your trip around specific destinations: in Esztergom, sacred architecture, art and trails come together on Szent Tamás Hill. Near Esztergom-Kertváros, there is also an educational trail with a specified length and walking time. This gives you different options for your visits—from a loop of about an hour to a trail with a chapel and a panoramic view of the city.
Plan your arrival and routes
The Esztergom Basilica can be reached by road, by boat, by bicycle and by bus. These transport options give you different starting points for planning your journey; you can make your specific choice based on your own travel arrangements.
The Strázsa Hill educational trail near Esztergom-Kertváros is a circular route, 1,200 metres long, with a walking time of about one hour. This gives you a specific timeframe for a walk. Another trail on Szent Tamás Hill follows a special Stations of the Cross route to the Fájdalmas-Szűz Chapel. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city. The circular route and the Stations of the Cross trail therefore differ both in their stated walking time and in their character: one is a loop with a specified duration, the other a trail with a chapel and viewpoint.
Architecture and art in Esztergom
The protected VĂziváros Church is an outstanding example of Italian Baroque architecture; it was renovated in 2012. The sculpture “Szent István megkoronázása” by Melocco MiklĂłs stands on the northern bastion of Várhegy. It depicts the coronation of Stephen, the first king of Hungary. The two sites offer different cultural themes: you can appreciate the church for its architectural style and the sculpture for the coronation it depicts.
In the wider travel destination of Komorn-Gran
The wider travel destination of Komorn-Gran offers a regional perspective on its own landscape and history. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found there and is particularly rich in fossils.
The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség comprises seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. The Baroque monument complex also features an exhibition on the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. It is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00, and from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00–17:00. Opening hours may change, so check the times before your visit.
At Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok, a guided tour begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. The offerings also include carriage rides to the nearby arboretum in one of two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares; advance booking is required. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” program features four-, five- and two-horse teams that visitors can try out themselves. Advance booking is also required for this program.
Other cultural highlights include the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont, with its interactive permanent archaeological exhibition and finds from the Brigetio excavations, and Monostori Erőd. The fortress is a military monument within the Komárom fortification system; exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the eras of the monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The Komárom fortification system, located within the territories of the two Komároms, is on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
