Nagyrév brings together a distinctive local history and natural features found in a ravine, an annual bloom, and three burial mounds. This combination offers a helpful starting point for planning your hotel stay: you can get to know the place through its local history and landscape. Additional cultural, botanical, and culinary examples belong to the wider travel destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok.

Tatár-árok and Local History

Tatár-árok runs through Nagyrév from the Holt-Tisza to the Tisza. The local population dug the ravine to protect the settlement from the Tatars. Its route and purpose are closely connected: the ravine is part of the local landscape and is also linked to a specific motive for protection. This makes Tatár-árok a way to explore local history if, during your trip, you would like to learn about Nagyrév’s past as well as its natural surroundings.

Recurring Nature and Burial Mounds

The annual Tisza mayfly bloom can be seen in all its splendor in Nagyrév. It adds a recurring natural feature to the historical context of Tatár-árok. If you would like to plan your trip specifically around the bloom, it is a good idea to check the timing in advance.

Nagyrév’s natural profile also includes three burial mounds (kunhalmok) in the outskirts of the settlement. The municipality identifies them as protected natural assets. Together with the annual bloom, they add named landscape features to the picture of Nagyrév.

The Tiszakürt Arboretum offers a botanical perspective: it is of national botanical significance and is also an important refuge for native flora and fauna. The arboretum is home to more than 1,000 plant species and varieties and has been a nature reserve of national importance since 2001. In the Öregkert area, there is a signposted 3.5-kilometer walking trail network. The collection, protected area, and walking trails each give the site its own botanical or landscape focus.

The cultural history of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok is also represented. The Kiss-Pál Museum in Tiszafüred is one of Hungary’s oldest rural museums. It is housed in a Neoclassical mansion built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century. Two permanent exhibitions focus on Tiszafüred’s approximately 7,000-year archaeological past and a local ethnographic collection featuring outstanding pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. Check the exhibition details before your trip. The Nyúzó-Gáspár Pottery House is also part of the museum. It displays material artifacts of the once-popular local pottery craft and the original domestic setting.

A regional cherry-growing tradition in Nagykörű brings together history and varietal diversity: cherry cultivation there dates back nearly 200 years. The Nagykörű cherry is a regional variety; its tree and fruit differ from those of the Germersdorf varieties. Nagykörű is home to Hungary’s largest contiguous cherry-growing area and the country’s largest collection of cherry varieties, with more than 100 varieties. The annual Cherry Festival is the town’s largest event.
