Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok combines the landscape around Lake Tisza with nature reserves, museums and a distinctive cherry culture. Lake Tisza, in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, serves as a tourism hub. Further along your trip, places such as Tiszakürt, Tiszafüred and Nagykörű each offer something different—from botanical collections and historical exhibitions to a regional cherry variety.

Lake Tisza and cycling

Lake Tisza and its surroundings are among the region’s outstanding areas for cycling tourism. The international EuroVelo 11 route offers another point of reference for cyclists: it runs along the Tisza through Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County. The lake and its surroundings provide one regional focal point, while the river route provides another. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can take both into account when choosing your priorities.

Landscape and nature reserves

The Közép-Tisza–Jászság landscape unit of the Hortobágy National Park Directorate covers the western part of the county. It includes the Jászság, the middle Tisza region between Kisköre and Csongrád, the Tiszazug and western Nagykunság. The Közép-Tisza Landscape Protection Area extends mainly across the Tisza floodplain between Kisköre and Tiszaug. Within this protected floodplain, Kovácsi-Holt-Tisza is one of four so-called refuge oxbow lakes.

In Tiszakürt, the arboretum combines botanical significance with nature conservation. It is considered nationally significant from a botanical perspective and has been a nationally significant nature reserve since 2001. Its collection includes more than 1,000 plant species and varieties. At the same time, the arboretum is an important refuge for native flora and fauna. These different features make it a distinctive destination for travelers interested in plants and protected landscapes.

The Öregkert area of the Tiszakürt Arboretum has a signposted network of 3.5 kilometers of walking paths. The path length offers a practical reference for planning a walk, with a focus both on the garden as a botanical collection and on its importance as a natural area.

Museums and cultural history

The Kiss-Pál Museum in Tiszafüred is one of Hungary’s oldest museums outside the capital. It is housed in a Neoclassical manor house built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century. Two permanent exhibitions focus on different subjects: one explores Tiszafüred’s archaeological past, dating back around 7,000 years, while the other presents an ethnographic exhibition featuring outstanding objects from the 17th and 18th centuries. Check the current exhibition details before your visit.

The Nyúzó-Gáspár Potter’s House is also part of the Kiss-Pál Museum. It displays material evidence of the local pottery craft, once popular, as well as the original living environment. Together with the museum’s exhibitions, the Potter’s House offers a glimpse into different aspects of local history: the archaeological past, ethnographic collections and a historic craft.

In Szolnok, the Szigligeti Theatre and the artists’ colony are among the county’s major cultural attractions. The theatre is one of the region’s important cultural centers. The Szolnok Artists’ Colony is located on the site of the former Castle of Szolnok and is of outstanding importance to the county’s visual arts. The Jász Museum preserves Lehel’s Horn. In recent years, the museum’s community archaeology group has also handed over several hundred archaeological finds and dozens of newly discovered sites.

Cherry culture and recreation

Cherry growing in Nagykörű has a history of nearly 200 years. The Nagykörű cherry is a regional variety; its tree and fruit differ from those of the Germersdorf varieties. Nagykörű is also home to Hungary’s largest contiguous cherry-growing area. The country’s largest collection of cherry varieties, with more than 100 varieties, is located there. The annual Cherry Festival celebrates this tradition and is the town’s biggest event. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

The Cserkeszőlő Thermal and Beach Bath offers a different kind of leisure experience. It has 19 pools, slides, and beach volleyball and beach soccer courts, and offers recreation and leisure activities for all ages, families and groups of friends. If particular facilities are important to your plans, check their current status before traveling.
