Nádudvar draws attention to ceramics and folk crafts. At the Black Ceramics Exhibition House, you can try throwing clay on a pottery wheel and learn about how ceramic vessels are made.

Experience and understand ceramics

At the Black Ceramics Exhibition House, hands-on activities and the production process complement an exhibition of works by folk artist Ifj. Fazekas István. The pottery wheel offers a practical introduction to pottery, while the exhibition draws attention to the finished works. If you would like to try the activity yourself, check the current arrangements before your visit.

Nádudvar’s earlier history is also connected with ceramics: archaeological ceramic fragments from the Avar period point to pottery-making here at the time. This brings two different perspectives together: the exhibition house presents production and folk crafts, while the fragments point to earlier pottery-making in the town.

Plan visits by appointment

The Fazekasház in Nádudvar can be visited year-round by prior appointment. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm the current arrangements before travelling. This is especially important if you want to make the visit a fixed part of your stay.

Medicinal water as another attraction

Nádudvar’s Strandfürdő is associated with medicinal water containing sodium bicarbonate and fluoride. This water is particularly suitable for treating musculoskeletal disorders. If you would like to include the Strandfürdő in your plans, check the current visiting options beforehand.

Hajdú-Bihar: landscape and culture on a larger scale

In the wider Hajdú-Bihar destination, the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park – the Puszta World Heritage site offers a different perspective on the region. It covers nearly 75,000 hectares in the Great Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. The cultural landscape preserves visible evidence of more than 2,000 years of traditional pastoralism.

The Hortobágyi-halastó nature trail offers walks of 3.6, 5.4 or 10 kilometres, with no difficult sections. The three route lengths let you choose how far you would like to walk. The Hortobágyi-halastó fishpond system is also a Ramsar site, an Important Bird Area, part of the World Heritage site and a Natura 2000 site—so for nature enthusiasts, it is both a route through the landscape and an area with several conservation designations.

For other ways to observe nature, Hortobágy Wildlife Park offers a bookable Land Rover safari with an expert guide to see wild horses and aurochs. A roughly one-and-a-half-hour carriage ride through the Hortobágy Puszta introduces visitors to the landscape’s natural and cultural heritage, as well as its herding traditions. The experiences differ in format: a guided off-road drive on the one hand, and a carriage ride of about an hour and a half on the other. Check the dates before making plans.

The wider Hajdú-Bihar destination also reflects the cultural history of herders. The Shepherd Museum presents herders’ lives, along with handmade clothing, tools and decorated personal belongings. It is housed in a former coach house that was part of the Hortobágyi-Csárda complex. An insight into herders’ lives and everyday objects therefore complements the landscape and ceramics that can shape your stay.
