Budapest reveals its history through distinct layers of urban planning and architecture. The Buda Castle District features a medieval and distinctively Baroque style that differs from the architecture of Pest. At the same time, the city has preserved the distinctive structural characteristics of the former towns of Pest, Buda and Óbuda. Architecture, river scenery and urban spaces thus offer different perspectives on Budapest.

Cityscape and Architecture

Andrássy Avenue is a representative example of urban planning that made use of the latest technical facilities of the time; it was laid out between 1872 and 1885. The Millennium Underground Railway was built between 1893 and 1896 and is also an example of implementing urban planning solutions using the latest technical facilities of the time. These two periods mark distinct stages in urban planning in the late 19th century.

The Parliament Building is an outstanding example of a large official building featuring 19th-century eclectic architecture. The banks of the Danube also shape the city’s image: views of the river are part of Budapest’s historic urban landscape and a unique example of the harmonious interaction between human society and the natural environment.

Getting to Budapest and Getting Around

For airport transfers, the 100E Airport Express connects the airport to central Budapest around the clock. Check service details before travelling. In the city, historic tram line N2 runs along the Danube embankment. Along the way, visitors can see, among other sights, the Parliament Building, Budapest’s bridges, Buda Castle and panoramic views of Gellért Hill. According to BKK, the line is one of the ten most beautiful tram routes in the world.

The also-historic tram line N19 offers panoramic views of the Buda riverbank. While the N2 passes several named landmarks and bridges along the Danube embankment, the N19 focuses on the panorama of the Buda riverbank. Timetables may change, so check them before travelling. Another option in Budapest is the MOL Bubi public bike-sharing system, which is available around the clock. Check availability and coverage before travelling.

Thermal Baths and Island Greenery

Széchenyi Thermal Bath was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was the first spa in Pest. It is the largest bathing complex in Budapest and Europe. This offers a concrete glimpse into the history of bathing alongside a striking feature of the cityscape today.

Margaret Island is an important recreational area in Budapest. It can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by pedicab; a jogging track runs around the island. The island’s water tower was built in 1911 and offers a 360-degree panorama of Budapest. Palatinus Thermal Bath, with its distinctive swimming pools, is located in the heart of Margaret Island. The island therefore offers a range of activities and views: exploring on foot or on wheels, the jogging track and the panorama from the water tower.

Roman History and Hungarian Products

The Aquincum Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of the ancient Romans. At the Great Market Hall, Hungarikum Street showcases another side of the country, presenting Hungarian products such as paprika from Kalocsa and Szeged, sausages from Gyula and Csaba, Herz and Pick salami, acacia honey, lavender products from Tihany, AszĂş wine from Tokaj and foie gras.

At the end of Hungarikum Street, visitors can use a three-dimensional map to discover Hungary’s 22 wine regions and some typical Hungarian grape varieties. The map shows wine-growing regions and grape varieties together in a shared spatial display. The Great Market Hall also offers a private tasting tour with six stops, recommended for groups of 10 to 25 people.
