Uppony is a destination for travelers who take protected landscapes and hiking into account when choosing where to go. The Országos Kéktúra hiking trail passes through the village alongside Málnás Vendégház; nearby are the Upponyi-szoros and Damasa-szakadék.

Protected built-up area

Uppony lies at the center of the Lázbérci Tájvédelmi Körzet. The built-up area of the village is also protected. This means that protected status is not only part of the description of the landscape outside the village, but explicitly applies to the village itself. If you choose Uppony as a destination, this connection is an important part of its landscape setting.

Gorge and geological traces

Near Uppony, the summit of the Upponyi-szoros offers a view of the Lázbéri-víztározó in the southern part of the gorge. Geology is also a defining theme: 25 caves open up in the karst-forming limestone. At the northwestern end of the Upponyi-szoros lies the Upponyi 1. sz. kőfülke. Remains of Pleistocene mollusks and vertebrates were excavated there, including the bones of a cave bear. The gorge thus combines a scenic viewpoint with a history of discoveries reaching far back into the history of the Earth and humanity.

The nearby Damasa-szakadék has its own story of formation. It formed as a rockslide following an earthquake about 200 years ago, creating pseudotectonic caves.

Hiking and stamp point

The Országos Kéktúra hiking trail passes through Uppony alongside Málnás Vendégház. Kéktúra hikers can also get their hiking passports stamped in Uppony. If getting your passport stamped is important for your hike, check the current arrangements before traveling. This way, you can keep the route connection in mind without assuming specific opening hours or a particular stamp point.

For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the trail’s connection to the village and the landscape features in the nearby area. The gorge includes a viewpoint at the summit, a view of the reservoir in its southern part, and caves in karst-forming limestone. Damasa-szakadék adds a different geological story of formation. These features offer different starting points for planning your trip without combining them into a single circular route.

More nature-related highlights in the wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

Those who look beyond the immediate area to the wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén will find another focus on caves in Aggtelek: the Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometer long, takes 60 minutes, and is rated easy. A nature trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and presents the area’s natural and cultural-historical values. These are distinct regional points of interest; for Uppony itself, the Kéktúra trail, the protected built-up area, and the nearby gorge remain the most relevant anchors.

Choosing a hotel based on your travel interests

Shape your search for a hotel in Uppony around the themes you want to define your stay: the protected village setting, the connection to the Kéktúra hiking trail, or the geological features nearby. Getting your hiking passport stamped can be practical, while the gorge and caves provide a focus on the landscape. Check the current arrangements for the stamp point if this is important to your plans.
