Telkibánya combines geological features and local history with hiking trails. Notable themes include the perlite formations in the Ósva Valley, the Rákóczi hiking route, and historic inscriptions and grave markers.

Geology and hiking trails

In the Ósva Valley near Telkibánya lies Perlitfolyás, a volcanic rock formation that formed during post-volcanic activity. The area is fenced off for protection and accident prevention. Perlitfolyás is a geological feature of the town; the trails offer their own landscape and tour-related themes.

Along the hiking route that follows the Ósva stream, Perlitnadeln are found in the Cser-hegy mountain range. Thus, the same theme encompasses both Perlitfolyás in the Ósva Valley, formed after volcanic activity, and the Perlitnadeln along the route in Cser-hegy. The Rákóczi hiking route also passes through Telkibánya. It is recommended for people who enjoy longer, multi-day hikes.

Inscriptions and grave markers

In Telkibánya’s Vártemplom, a Latin inscription was placed on the wall opposite the pulpit in 1624. The text was later expanded; in 1892, it was replaced by a Hungarian-language version. The sequence highlights the inscription’s different stages: its Latin beginning, the later expansion, and the change of language in the 19th century.

The Gombfás temető reflects another form of cultural heritage. Its grave markers were originally classified into six different Gombfa forms, later totaling eight. The Szent Katalin ispotály és kápolna, a historic monument and local attraction, is also part of Telkibánya’s cultural heritage.

More places to explore in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén region

The Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén region also has destinations with different natural and cultural themes. The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is part of the Zemplén Mountains. The area’s landscape influences its plant and animal life. This perspective complements Telkibánya’s specific rock formations and hiking trails with a look at the region’s landscape and ecology.

The Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst. A nature trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and presents the area’s natural and cultural-historical values. The short Aggtelek cave tour is 1 kilometer long, takes 60 minutes, and is considered easy. This is a different time commitment from the recommendation to take longer, multi-day hikes on the Rákóczi route through Telkibánya.

In Miskolc, Diósgyőr Castle reached its heyday during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. It later served as a residence and as a wedding gift for six queens. The Tokaj wine region offers another regional perspective: as a protected wine-growing area, it is legally protected. Its climate, soil quality, and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes. The Miskolc National Theatre is a performing arts complex with five stages.
