There are two main aspects to a trip to Hejce: the town’s history and the routes in the surrounding area. A late Baroque Reformed church, a bell tower from the late 18th century and a memorial in the town center are part of its historical character; a cycling loop and a hiking detour offer different kinds of routes. If you are looking for hotels in Hejce, these aspects can help you plan your stay around your interests.

Church, Bell Tower and Remembrance

The Reformed church in Hejce was built in 1789 in the late Baroque style. About 20 meters away stands a stone bell tower dating from 1791. The dates are only two years apart: the church and the tower are two distinct historical landmarks from the same era.

A memorial to the victims of the 2006 Slovak aircraft disaster was inaugurated in the center of Hejce in 2007. The inauguration took place the year after the disaster, making it a different point of reference in time from the buildings of the late 18th century. The town’s history thus encompasses both older architectural heritage and remembrance of a more recent event.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

A published 32-kilometer cycling loop runs from Gönc via Dobogó-nyereg, Borsó-hegy and Fehér-kút to Hejce, then back to Gönc. Hejce lies on the loop; Gönc is the starting and return point. This is useful to know when planning a circular route that starts and ends in the same place. Check current route conditions before setting out.

A detour on the “Secrets of Borsó and Gergely-hegy” hiking route leads in the area around Hejce along a gently ascending path through pine and beech forest to Sólyom-kő and Borsó-hegy, then continues toward Gergely-hegy. The two options have different features: the cycling loop has a stated total length of 32 kilometers, while the hiking detour features a gentle ascent and a forest passage.

Getting There by Bus

For the bus journey described, the route lists “Hejce, town hall” as the stop where to get off. Bus travel to Hejce from the Hidasnémeti or Novajidrány railway stations is described as very infrequent and difficult. Check current transport information before traveling, as stops and services may change.

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén as a Regional Setting

The wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén also includes the Baradla-Domica cave system and the Tokaj wine region as distinct regional attractions. The cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometer long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. In the Tokaj wine region, the climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes; the region is legally protected as a designated wine-growing area.
