Gerendás offers several ways to shape your stay: a linden avenue along the main road, memorials to local and transport history, and churches with different architectural histories. The area around Csicsely-tó is also suitable for walking. When looking for hotels in Gerendás, you can focus on nature, local history, or both.

Linden Avenue, Tree History and a Walk

Hársfasor is a linden avenue designated as a natural asset, running along the town’s main road. The beekeepers’ association planted the avenue in the late 1920s. Its status as a natural asset and its origins give the streetscape a special connection to local natural history.

Another tree story concerns the Topolyfa, which stood in the area of Gerendás for 250 years and was marked as a landmark on historical maps. A sapling grown from a shoot of this tree was planted in 1994. The municipality placed a bench beside it and installed a carved commemorative plaque about the tree’s history. The site is freely accessible. The tree’s long history and the sapling’s later planting date are two distinct points in time.

If you would rather visit parkland than walk along an avenue, Csicsely-tó offers a suitable stroll: the area around the lake is ideal for walking. Gerendás thus brings together different connections with nature—a linden avenue along the main road, the memory of a historic tree, and a walking area by the lake.

Monuments to Local and Transport History

The war memorial, erected during the First World War, was completed in 1929 and bears a bronze Turul figure. Another monument in Gerendás is pyramid-shaped and commemorates Hungary’s first concrete road, completed between Gerendás and Csorvás in 1931. While the war memorial commemorates the fallen, the road monument focuses on transport history. Both offer a reason to notice different forms of remembrance while exploring the town.

Churches and Cultural Connections

The Catholic Church of King Saint Stephen was built in 1862 by Count György Apponyi. It became a parish church in 1927 and was renovated inside and out in 1962. Its history thus connects its 19th-century construction with later institutional and structural changes.

The Lutheran church of the Gerendás-Csorvás Lutheran branch congregation was built in the 1930s and consecrated in 1937 by Bishop Dr. Sándor Raffay. The town’s history is also connected to Mihály Munkácsy: in his youth, the painter spent a great deal of time at his uncle István Reök’s estate in Gerendás, where he drew and painted. Alongside its monuments, these connections give the town a religious and art-historical dimension.

More Nature Experiences in the Wider Békés Destination

The wider Békés destination offers more nature spots, each focused on different activities. Körösvölgyi Animal Park is set in a 26-hectare grove. An approximately two-kilometre walking trail passes bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures.

The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail offers a different experience: it starts at the jetty of Körösvölgyi Animal Park and follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow’s wildlife and plant life. The trail is accessible only by canoe or boat and is intended mainly for canoeists and rowboat users without an expert guide. The comparison highlights the different activities available in the wider Békés destination without attributing these locations to Gerendás.
