Gádoros brings together churches, monuments and other places of remembrance, as well as an excursion destination on the edge of town. When planning your stay, you can distinguish between the local sights by their focus: religious history, remembrance of historical events, and a short excursion to Werner Castle.

Churches and religious places of remembrance

The Roman Catholic church in Gádoros was consecrated on September 8, 1891. The Reformed church represents a later period: it was built in 1929 and consecrated by Dezső Balthazár, a Reformed bishop. It is also considered the third church in Gádoros. The local community recommends the Reformed and Evangelical churches as noteworthy buildings. The garden of the Reformed church is also home to the “Ima ösvény,” a memorial path dedicated to a former pastor and his wife. Alongside the building’s history, the path offers a personal focus on remembrance.

Monuments and memorial sites

A monument to the soldiers who fell in the Second World War stands in the front garden of the Roman Catholic church. Bordás Tibor created it in 1989 on commission from the local community. In Kossuth Street, the Turul monument commemorates 135 soldiers from Gádoros who fell in the First World War. A monument shaped like a gádor commemorates the 1848–1849 Revolution and War of Independence. The Vértanúk Ligete memorial grove is also located in the cemetery. The three dated references span the War of Independence of 1848–1849 and both the First and Second World Wars. Vértanúk Ligete is another named place of remembrance in the cemetery.

Werner Castle and playground

Werner Castle is on the edge of town and makes a good destination for a short excursion. The castle has a beautifully landscaped park. If you are planning to visit the castle, check in advance what visiting options are available. The “Gesztenyés” playground is on Kossuth Street and has modern wooden play equipment. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its current condition before visiting.

More destinations in the wider Békés destination area

In the wider Békés destination area, the Körösvölgyi Animal Park is located in Anna-liget in Szarvas. The 26-hectare grove has a walking trail of about two kilometers that passes bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail starts at the park’s jetty. It follows one kilometer of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake; eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow and its animal and plant life. The trail is accessible only by canoe or boat.

Another focus for nature observation in the wider Békés destination area is the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely, near Dévaványa. In Hungary, this is the only place where visitors can see great bustards at close range. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programs and astronomy presentations may be offered on request. At Kardoskúti Fehértó, an internationally recognized wetland has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 1979. Two observation towers make it easier to watch the birdlife there.
