Szalánta: Sacred Architecture and Landscape
Accommodation in Szalánta
Landscape and Getting There
In the Németi district, the settlement is laid out on both sides of a valley that runs from north to south. The municipal area of Szalánta, including Németi, lies in the Baranyai-dombság microregion. This hilly landscape is characterized by broad, plateau-like ridges and steep-sided, in some places more heavily eroded valleys. The landscape therefore encompasses both broad ridges and distinctive valley formations.
Szalánta can be reached by road, by car and by bus. Route 58 provides good and quick access to the village from Pécs (15 km) and Harkány (12 km). According to the stated distances, Harkány, at 12 km, is closer than Pécs, at 15 km. If you are travelling by bus, it is best to check the current timetable before departure, as bus schedules can change. If you are driving, it is also advisable to check the current traffic conditions.
Sacred Buildings and Local Culture
The Catholic church in Németi is a listed late Baroque building constructed between 1795 and 1804. The listed Roman Catholic Jézus Szent Szíve Chapel is in Eszterágpuszta. Its façades feature horizontal bands of yellow and brown glazed Zsolnay tiles.
The Zsolnay Chapel and a bell tower are located in the centre of Eszterágpuszta. The tower has a square floor plan, three storeys and a covering of horizontal bands of yellow and red unglazed bricks. Glazed yellow and brown tiles define the chapel’s surface, while unglazed yellow and red brick bands play the same decorative role on the tower. For architecture enthusiasts, comparing them offers a concrete look at different materials, glazes and shades.
On the way to the Németi district, there is a lake in a picturesque setting that visitors can see. This provides a scenic point of interest alongside the sacred buildings. Szalánta is also home to a South Slavic folk-dance ensemble belonging to the Marica Cultural Association. This is another cultural point of interest, not limited to architecture.
Culture in the Broader Destination of Baranya
Pécs forms its own cultural context within the broader destination of Baranya. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae comprises decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The combination of burial chambers below ground and memorial chapels above illustrates the different levels of the site.
The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the history of the family and the factory. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and enjoyed free of charge during opening hours. As opening hours can change, it is advisable to check them before visiting.
