Kölked: White Storks and the Danube Floodplain
Accommodation in Kölked
White storks and the Danube floodplain are at the heart of a trip to Kölked. A nature trail and the Fehér Gólya Múzeum explore these themes from different perspectives: the floodplain is a habitat for storks, while the exhibition focuses on the species and its cultural associations.
The Danube Floodplain and the Nagypartosi tanösvény
Kölked lies on the edge of the Danube floodplain, which has been a habitat for white storks for centuries. The floodplain provides the birds with nesting and feeding grounds. The stork is therefore not just the subject of an exhibition, but also part of the area’s ecological character.
The Nagypartosi tanösvény runs from the “Tojta” starting point in the municipality of Kölked through the floodplain to the steep bank of the Danube. The trail offers insights into the life and natural values of the floodplain. Its focus is therefore on the habitat, while the exhibition is about the white stork as a species.
The Fehér Gólya Múzeum
The Fehér Gólya Múzeum closed on June 15, 2026, for technical reasons. Check with the park administration for reopening announcements before planning a visit. Since 2002, the themed exhibition has focused on the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and is considered unique, even by European standards.
Exhibition topics include the white storks’ diet, nesting behavior, and migration, other members of the stork family, and literary and folkloric associations with storks. The subject therefore encompasses both biological and cultural perspectives on storks.
