In Dunaszekcső, the Roman traces at Várhegy, local history at the Örökségház and a walking route by the Telelő take centre stage. If you are looking for a hotel in Dunaszekcső, you can plan your trip around whether you are most interested in archaeological sites, the exhibition or a tour on foot or by bike.

Local History and Roman Traces

The Örökségház houses an exhibition on local history and an event hall. Visits must be arranged in advance. The building that houses the centre today served as a church until 1810. This means one building brings together its former use as a church and its current presentation of local history.

The Roman fort of Lugio stood at Várhegy. Its ground plan was an irregular quadrilateral that followed the contours of the hill, with a square tower at each corner. The shape describes a fortification whose layout was adapted to the contours of the hill. Excavations at Várhegy uncovered part of the fort’s limestone wall and the remains of a small, rectangular brick building with a terrazzo floor. A fragment of a bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius was also found at the fort. The architecture and finds offer different ways to explore the site’s Roman history, from the layout of the fortification to a single object.

Another historical trace is the Töröklyuk, a structure from the Ottoman period carved into the riverbank. Its origins are uncertain. Both its attribution to this period and the open question of its origins are part of its description.

Nature Reserve and Walk by the Telelő

The Dunaszekcső Loess Cliff Nature Reserve (Dunaszekcsői Löszfal Természetvédelmi Terület) has been protected since 1998. A walking route of about 6.5 kilometres runs around the Telelő, an oxbow of the Danube. The route starts and ends at Templomtér. The approximate distance and named starting point make it easier to plan this walk as a separate activity. Check the route details locally before setting out.

Bike Tour and Ferry Crossing

The published Dunaszekcső–Baja–Dunaszekcső cycling route starts at the Örökségház and includes a ferry crossing to Dunafalva. According to a municipal notice, ferry service between Dunaszekcső and Dunafalva has been suspended for an indefinite period for technical reasons since 19 June 2025. Check the current ferry status immediately before travelling; do not assume the planned crossing will be available.

The two tours have different starting points: the walking route around the Telelő starts and ends at Templomtér, while the published cycling loop starts at the Örökségház. For the walk, the main thing to check is the route information locally; for the bike tour, you should also check the current status of the planned ferry crossing.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs is another point of cultural and historical interest. It includes decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. These were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with elaborate Christian wall paintings. The necropolis thus offers a distinct perspective on Early Christian funerary architecture and wall painting in Baranya.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter is also part of the wider destination of Baranya. Exhibitions include “Golden Age of Zsolnay”, “Pink Exhibition” and an exhibition on the family and the factory’s history. The publicly accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the current opening hours before visiting. These cultural attractions broaden the picture of Baranya, while Dunaszekcső’s local character is shaped by its local history, Roman sites and the routes described here.
