Magyarhertelend offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: a village centre shaped by its church, a wooded landscape, and local activities for creative, sporting, and craft interests. The Baranya Canal divides Magyarhertelend into two parts and helps you get your bearings. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh up whether the landscape, local history, or a particular activity should be the defining feature of your stay.

Landscape and Village Layout

The entire administrative area of Magyarhertelend lies within a landscape protection or landscape conservation zone because of the Mecsek Mountains and the varied topography. The built-up area is also generally surrounded by woodland. There are numerous trees on private plots and public land, especially in the recreation areas, giving the surroundings an almost forest-like feel.

There are 17 springs on the slopes of the Mecsek within the administrative area. They are designated as nationally significant natural areas protected by law. Core ecological areas have been designated in the woods south of the village and in the woods at the southern tip of the administrative area. Natural and near-natural communities along the Baranya Canal form ecological corridors.

Finding Your Way Around the Baranya Canal

Two bridges connect the areas divided by the canal. One is to the north, at the junction of roads 6602 and 6608; the other is on the road to the Gazda-Sped campsite. If you are considering accommodation in different locations, this division can help you work out where each one is situated in the village.

Church and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the most distinctive features of the village and stands at its highest point. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. It was first built as a round chapel in 1775 and took its present form in 1820. The church’s use by the faithful is also part of its history.

Creative and Sporting Activities

At the Legendák és mesék háza, you can get creative on your own at the venue during the announced periods, for example using fabric or acrylic paints and stencils. When planning your visit, check whether it falls within one of these periods. Magyarhertelend’s sports ground has a grass pitch and an asphalt court; both are open to everyone.
