There are also historic sites, trails and a market with more than 100 stalls. This lets you balance culture, landscape and everyday town life according to your interests.
Culture and history
In the main gallery at Experience Barnsley, “The Barnsley Wall” tells the well-known story of Barnsley from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Exhibits include archaeological artefacts, archive displays, films and interactive features. The collections also draw attention to working life, leisure, and home and family life over time. A dedicated gallery hosts temporary exhibitions; the annual programme includes displays from the museum and archive collections.
On the outskirts of Barnsley lie the substantial remains of Monk Bretton Priory, a Cluniac monastery founded in the 12th century. Visitors can see its unusually well-defined layout, the almost entirely preserved west wing and a 15th-century gatehouse. The surviving sections offer different insights into the history of the monastery.
Wentworth Castle Gardens is the only landscape in South Yorkshire to hold a Grade I listing. The grounds include 500 acres of parkland, home to fallow and red deer. Cannon Hall also has an adventure playground and woodland trails.
Elsecar Heritage Centre combines events and exhibitions with independent shops, studios, galleries and cafés. These are housed in former Victorian engineering workshops, ironworks, coal mines and foundries. Barnsley Civic offers a year-round programme of exhibitions and events; specific listings may change.
Wetlands, parks and trails
RSPB Dearne Valley–Old Moor is a wetland with reedbeds, wet grasslands and wildflower-rich meadows. It has held Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) status since 2023 and is home to bitterns, marsh harriers and avocets. Possible activities there include peaceful walks, watching spoonbills and observing bats at night.
The 240-acre Worsbrough Mill Country Park is a nature reserve with abundant wildlife and natural habitats. At Worsbrough Country Park, a free, self-guided nature trail runs around the reservoir, where visitors can spot wildlife. Dearne Valley Country Park covers 80 hectares of river habitats, wet woodland and grassland. Rabbit Ings Country Park, in turn, offers 157 acres of open space with woodland and wetlands that support a wide variety of wildlife. Peaceful walks and wildlife watching are possible activities there.
The Trans Pennine Trail runs through the Barnsley Borough on traffic-free paths for cyclists and pedestrians. Access points include Elsecar, Wombwell and Penistone. This gives the trail a different character from the nature trails in individual parks: it crosses the borough and has several named access points.
