Rotherham brings together medieval architecture, industrial heritage and excursions into the countryside. Rotherham Bridge is home to the Chapel of Our Lady, one of only four surviving medieval bridge chapels in the country. Check access arrangements before visiting.

As well as the minster town of Rotherham, the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham includes smaller towns, attractive villages and a further 100 square miles of gently rolling to hilly countryside. This means a stay can take in not just the town but also the Borough’s diverse landscape.

History between Abbey and Steelworks

Roche Abbey comprises extensive ruins of a Cistercian abbey in a dramatic limestone valley. Its Early Gothic transepts are part of a Georgian landscape designed by Capability Brown. Here, monastic architecture and landscape design from different periods come together. The site is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI); its natural features include wildlife, four waterfalls and a stream. A public footpath runs alongside the abbey.

Magna is located in the former Templeborough Steelworks and houses one of the original electric arc furnaces that drove steel production in the late 20th century. Magna Science Adventure Centre spreads interactive, hands-on exhibits across four pavilions: Air, Earth, Fire and Water. On a shop-floor tour with former steelworkers, visitors can see an authentic electric arc furnace and artefacts from steelmaking. Participation depends on booking and programme availability.

Castle History, Museum and Stately Home

Boston Castle is a small visitor attraction with historical information and exhibitions about the castle’s history. An interactive touchscreen, along with costumes and games for children, adds to the experience. Access to the rooftop terrace, with its panoramic views over Rotherham and Sheffield, is available on request.

Clifton Park Museum explores Rotherham’s rich history. At Wentworth Woodhouse, you can choose between guided tours of the stately home and a self-guided route through the state rooms and gardens. Parks, Trails and Waterside Activities

Clifton Park offers gardens, a free playground, a water play area, mini golf, a miniature railway and a fun park. The park can be reached via local walking and cycling routes around Rotherham. Individual attractions may have separate schedules.

Ulley Country Park offers walking trails, cycling, fishing, sailing, and bird and wildlife watching. A path runs around the reservoir. Rother Valley Country Park has cycling trails for all ability levels, as well as flat walking paths and lakeside trails. Visitors can sail on the main lake and use stand-up paddleboards, canoes, pedalos or rowing boats. Availability of boating activities may vary by season and operating arrangements.
