Malvern offers several distinct highlights for a culture- and history-focused stay: Great Malvern Priory, the Malvern Museum of Local History, Priory Park and Malvern Theatres. The themes range from church architecture and museum collections to park design and theatre programmes. If you are considering which aspects are of particular interest during your stay, the seasonal tower tours and changing theatre programme are important points to consider when planning.

Great Malvern Priory and its architecture

The church of Great Malvern Priory was remodelled in the 15th century in the Perpendicular style. This English Gothic style is characterised by its emphasis on vertical lines. The church features locally made tiles, stained-glass windows and misericords in the choir stalls. The remodelling provides a point of reference in the building’s history; the architectural features add specific details to the picture. Tower tours at Great Malvern Priory take place on selected Saturdays between April and the end of November. They are offered hourly between 11 am and 4 pm; the last tour starts at 3 pm. Dates may change, so check in advance whether a tour is running on your chosen Saturday.

Museum collections on the Priory and Water Cure

The Malvern Museum of Local History is housed in the town’s old monastic gatehouse. Its collection comprises more than 8,000 objects. Larger artefacts on permanent display include medieval stonework and wooden pieces on loan from the church of Great Malvern Priory. These loans provide a tangible link between the collection items and the Priory church. In addition, an extensive collection is devoted to the Malvern Water Cure from 1842 onwards. This places artefacts from the Priory church alongside a dedicated focus on the local water cure as distinct themes within the museum.

Experience Malvern Water

While the museum collection explores the history of the Malvern Water Cure from 1842 onwards, you can taste Malvern Water straight from the hills at the Malvhina Fountain in Great Malvern. These are two distinct ways to explore the subject of water: the historical collection on the one hand, and a chance to taste it at the fountain on the other.

Priory Park and Malvern Theatres

Priory Park is close to Great Malvern town centre and next to the historic Malvern Theatres. From there, you can see the Malvern Hills. The park is also home to an early 20th-century bandstand: an octagonal structure made of cast iron and wood. Its shape and combination of materials create a different architectural accent from the Priory, complementing the view of the church architecture with a distinctive park structure.

Malvern Theatres is located in the former Winter Gardens, which opened in 1885. The programme includes world-class theatre productions direct from the West End, as well as music, comedy and children’s entertainment. Schedules may change. If a particular performance is important to your trip, check the current dates in advance.
