Evesham on the River Avon
Accommodation in Evesham
Evesham is a medieval market town on the River Avon. Its character is shaped by its riverside setting as well as its architectural and urban history: Abbey Park is picturesquely situated on the Avon in the town centre, while museums, a cinema, a theatre and walking routes showcase different sides of the town. When searching for hotels in Evesham, these themes can help guide you – whether you are particularly interested in historic buildings or activities on the water.
Architectural and urban history
The Bell Tower dates from the early 16th century and was built by Abbot Lichfield. Its three stages reach a height of 110 feet. The tower is also a remarkable and very late example of the Perpendicular style. The Almonry Museum is housed in a 14th-century building that once served as the residence of the almoner of the Benedictine abbey. Its collection covers Evesham’s history from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Each of these two different buildings offers its own way of exploring the town’s past.
Culture, from cinema and theatre to intriguing stories
The Regal Cinema is a restored Art Deco cinema from the 1930s. The Henrician Theatre presents a varied programme of live theatre, live music, comedy, dance and film. If you are including cultural activities in your travel plans, you will find a different range of experiences here alongside the historic attractions: cinema and stage performances complement the town’s history, without requiring you to plan around a specific event date. The Evesham Ghost Walk explores mysterious stories from the town’s history and must be booked in advance.
Riverside scenery and walks along the Avon
Abbey Park combines its central location with the picturesque surroundings of the River Avon. The Workman Gardens are on the opposite bank; from there, a paved towpath leads directly to the river. Crown Meadow offers a different perspective on the landscape: this flood meadow is used for recreation for most of the year and has a riverside path along the Avon shaded by lime trees. The two places offer different ways to enjoy the river, from the paved access near the Workman Gardens to the tree-shaded path across the meadow.
There are also ways to experience the River Avon on the water. Dragon Pedalos are offered as an activity in Evesham. River trips are also offered from the Workman Gardens on a restaurant boat suitable for wheelchair users; operating details may vary. If either activity is important to your plans, check the relevant information in advance.
Walks, events and getting around
The Battlefield Walk passes through the site of the Battle of Evesham, a significant conflict in medieval England. A reenactment of the battle is part of the town’s events calendar. This includes a medieval festival and a camp with demonstrations of cooking, weapons and medicine. If you would like to attend the reenactment, check the event dates before your trip. For a different kind of activity, Evesham Velo Park has a 1 km cycle racing track, a pump track and a learn-to-ride track.
Evesham railway station is on the Cotswold Line. From the station, it is a ten-minute walk to Market Square, the town centre. The square therefore provides a useful reference point for getting your bearings; the walking time refers to the route from the station to Market Square, not to the routes to individual attractions.
