Hassocks and the South Downs

Hassocks lies at the foot of the South Downs and is a starting point for exploring the South Downs National Park and the South Downs area. There are good connections for trips there by train, car, bicycle and on foot. This lets you choose your destination in combination with how you want to explore the surrounding area. From the village, you can enjoy views of the Downs and the famous Jack and Jill Windmills. The location and views give your travel plans a clear scenic focus.

Butcher’s Wood

Butcher’s Wood, an ancient oak woodland with hazel, bluebells and other flora, is located in the South Downs National Park. A good network of paths provides access to the woodland. The terrain is also prone to seasonal waterlogging. Take this into account when planning your visit. A stay in the woodland therefore combines a trip to the national park with a particular focus on its oak trees and plant life.

Circular route and bicycle hire point

Route 1 is a 2-mile circular route linking Hassocks, Butcher’s Wood and Keymer. This gives you a specific route length and three named places to plan your trip around. As a circular route, it returns to the starting point. Some detailed route guides were last updated in 2013; check the route details relevant to you before setting out.

If you would like to travel by bicycle, Hassocks Community Cycle Hire is located just outside the exit of Hassocks railway station: on the southbound side, at platform 2 towards Brighton. This precise location helps you include the bicycle hire point in your travel and excursion plans.

Leisure at Adastra Park

Adastra Park offers a range of leisure facilities: a skatepark, play areas for children and fitness equipment for adults. The park also has tennis courts. They can be booked and paid for individually on a pay-and-play basis. This means there are different activities to choose from in the same park; for tennis, individual booking is the specific detail to consider when planning.

Gardening and local history

At the Museum of Gardening, you can explore more than 300 gardening tools and other historical materials through a varied exhibition. The gardening theme offers a distinct focus alongside Hassocks’s landscape and leisure attractions.

The village’s history also has a clearly dated reference point: the opening of Hassocks Gate railway station in 1841 marked the beginning of the present-day village. This event places Hassocks’s development within a specific historical turning point.

Different focuses for your stay

The attractions differ in their focus: Route 1 links three named places and specifies a route length; Butcher’s Wood focuses on its ancient oak woodland and flora; the Museum of Gardening is devoted to tools and historical materials. This lets you explore Hassocks according to your interests in the landscape, a particular route, gardening or local history.
