East Dean: Paths, Nature and Village Life
Accommodation in East Dean
East Dean offers a range of options for a stay: paths towards Birling Gap, nature watching at Friston Pond and facilities in the village. If you are looking for a hotel, you can set your priorities according to whether you want to focus on walks, the chalk landscape or local events.
Landscape and paths
East Dean is part of the parish of East Dean and Friston, which lies in the South Downs National Park. Nearby, Birling Gap and Crowlink are among the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Birling Gap beach has rock pools as well as areas of shingle and sand; access may vary depending on conditions. The cliffs and beach offer different nature-related themes to consider when planning a trip.
There are several paths towards Birling Gap for walking. The circular “Birling Gap walk from the Tiger Inn” starts at the Tiger Inn in East Dean and follows old drovers’ and smugglers’ routes to the sea. Check current path conditions before setting off. Other footpaths lead from East Dean via Crowlink down to Birling Gap. The Went Way bridleway and footpath also leads from East Dean to Birling Gap.
The differences in the routes are useful when choosing a path: the route from the Tiger Inn highlights old drovers’ and smugglers’ routes, the footpath names Crowlink as an intermediate point, and Went Way is explicitly described as a bridleway and footpath. Birling Gap is the common reference point in all three descriptions.
Friston Pond and village recreation
At Friston Pond, information boards describe the pond’s history, flora and fauna. A platform allows children to explore the pond under supervision; check locally whether it is in use. This provides information about the history and nature of the pond alongside a supervised opportunity for children to explore.
East Dean Recreation Ground has a pavilion, cricket pitch, tennis court and children’s playground. The tennis court is permanently open and free to use. Local conditions may apply to individual facilities. Unlike the paths in the countryside, Recreation Ground brings these facilities together in one place.
Building history and event dates
The parish church of St Simon and St Jude has a tower built in three stages in Saxon or early medieval Norman times. This three-stage tower adds a specific architectural detail to the nature and walking themes.
East Dean Village Market takes place every Wednesday in the Village Hall and the surrounding area on Gilberts Drive. East Dean Village Show takes place every year on the August Bank Holiday. The market and the show differ in frequency: one is a weekly event, the other an annual one. Check the dates before your trip.
